"Texas!" The little boy looked up in surprise at his name, he took his feet out of the river, the night was cold and there was heavy snow everywhere, the whirls of wind blew leaves off trees and somehow the lonely star didn't seem bothered by this, he looked like an empty shell."Hello Alaska.." he sniffed wiping tears off his face, he shivered from the cold after he gained back his senses of touch. His long black hair was flying with the wind, "what the hell were you thinking running away like that!? You had dad worried sick!" Said Alaska as he ran towards his brother and sat down beside him, he grabbed his hand and almost immediately retracted it. The Texan's body was cold to the touch, he seemed paler than usual when he wouldn't eat.
"He's not my father!" He yelled back at Alaska hiding his face in his buckled knees. Alaska drew closer to his brother and sighed, the words hit him hard since it was true for both of them. America wasn't his father either..it was the Russian empire who had created him..raised him and gave him a home, but at what cost? A shitty life was all he had to offer, when he was sold off to America.
He inched closer to the Texan, "he's not my father either but I'm not complaining.." he said in a harsh tone, the duo hadn't realized that the wind had stopped and it was just Alaska's heavy breathing against the Texan's soft one.
"I have been lied to my whole life! Not even two of my parents want me!" He said, the lake had somehow been frozen over, it had been five hours sitting there, it all felt like five minutes..
Texas stood up and walked towards the frozen river, he stood on it with ease and looked up with dazed puffy eyes into the stary night sky. Alaska followed him with his arms stretched out in case if something happened, the ice wasn't hard enough for people to stand on it, but his brother's light weight wasn't of any inconvenience to the frozen river.
There were five cracks, the key sound to the Texan's sharp ears as his daze was cut off and he pushed Alaska into the snow, he earned a loud thud and a groan coming from his brother.
When Alaska looked up his brother was gone, he sighed assuming he had run off like he always does. He dusted himself off and stood listening to any hint of the sound of running.
He didn't hear anything from the defining noise from the water flowing in the river...water flowing..frozen river...water...water...bangs..water- wait..bangs!
His eyes widened at the loud bangs that were getting weaker and weaker by the minute..his head turned to the broken ice and the fast running river water. There's was his brother banging on the ice, he was screaming as bubbles of air came out of his mouth...
"Texas!"
× × ×
The morning started with yelling, Texas noticed he was the last one out of bed out of all his siblings. He stretched and yawned as he sat up from his bed. "I love sleeping" he said, he brushed a tiny bit of hair off his face which was now down to his waist, he made it into a ponytail.
It wasn't long before two kids came barging into his room, it was Washington and Delaware. They looked at him and greeted him. "Good morning Texas!" Said Washington going up to him and looking him down.
"You should cut your hair, it makes you look like a woman" he pointed out, Texas didn't like to cut his hair but he nodded either way to make his brother smile which fortunately he did.
"Texas do you want anything to eat?" Asked Delaware, Texas shook his head. "But you haven't eaten in days! You look pale and skinny!" Said Delaware pulling up his shirt to stomach level, his rib cage could be seen but Texas pulled his shirt down. "No thanks Dela.."
Delaware smiled broadly at the old nickname coming back, it met a warm sensation in his stomach. "Okay then, just make sure to eat something!" He said before dragging a protesting Washington out by his ear.
Texas chuckled and smiled warmly as they left, his eyes quickly got adjusted to the dark interior of the darkened room, he put on some pink crocks that probably belonged to Maryland.
He got out of the room and squinted his eyes as the sunlight hit his body making him instantly feel warm, the room he was sleeping in was usually very cold and he had five blankets on him to try and keep him warm, the noise downstairs from children playing or watching TV filled his sensitive ears. He groaned at the noise and walked downstairs just to be greeted by a leg hug that made him trip face first onto the floor.
"Sorry Tex!" Said the little sunshine state as he crawled over to hs brother who sat up and was giggling, it was probably his first time faceplanting into something and he hit his funny bone while going down.
Florida laughed and hugged his brother clinging to him, Texas picked him up and headed towards the living room where his father was sitting looking troubled.
"Father?" America looked up at Texas and Florida, he smiled and signaled them to sit down beside him, Florida sat on Texas's knee and leaned over to see what his father was looking up on his phone, it was a medical website and America was looking on a leg treatment where supposedly they taught people with walking trauma to walk again, and if they aren't able to do so, wheelchairs were provided.
The top doctor was smiling from an informative article on the websites, they waved at the invisible camera, Florida had crawled away to play with Louisiana who was putting shapes into a wooden box.
America shifted from doctor to doctor until he sighed and clicked on a doctor's link. Her name was Monaco as written on her name tag.
"Father what are you doing?" Texas finally asked as he took interest in the website, "Since your brother can't walk.. I'm going to try to get his legs treated.. then maybe he can walk again.." he said smiling as he copied down nurse Monaco's number down on a notepad.
"What about Loui?" Texas asked again, Louisiana was his deaf sister who could only hear if you talk really close to her, the reason she's deaf is because she heard an argument going on with Virginia and Confederate, she busted her eardrums and now she doesn't speak or hear."I still don't know who I'll get her treated with.." he said, looking over his phone to a giggling Louisiana after Florida told her a joke.
Texas nodded and smiled st his father, a ringing doorbell could be heard, Texas and American both went to the door, not many states payed attention to mind but some of the southern states looked from out of the kitchen to the door.
America opened it and Texas looked from behind him, the door opened and a semi familiar face appeared on the door. The country looked down and gasped as he crouched down and hugged Texas.
Texas didn't know who it was that was hugging him, the person looked familiar, Texas was frustrated that he couldn't remember who this person was.
America grabbed his child from the country's arms and pulled him behind him again.
"Mexico."
