"I think Brittany's feeling it guys"
Hazel and I look at each other.
"I'm serious, she was like 'hey PJ' yesterday"
"You mean when you said hello to her in the hallway"
I say flatly.
"Yeah, but it's the way she said it. Hey. Like Heyyy"
I widen my eyes mockingly.
"It's getting real hot n heavy PJ"
"You know what, you don't get it okay-
She waves her hands around above her lunch plate.
"Lesbians are different okay. It's not as obvious as straights. It's...Subtle. It's subtle, right Hazel?"
Hazel nods and looks down.
"You wouldn't get it cuz"
For some reason the assumption causes a surge of anger in my chest and I squeeze my fork as i trace my now empty plate.
There's silence and I look up at Hazel. Her head is hung and there's a red tint to her cheeks. I feel a need to reassure her. Of what, I don't know. Guilt nestles in my brain and stays there for the rest of the day. Nestling deeper as I walk into bio last period.
"Heyyy"
I say to Hazel as I slide into my stool.
"Hi"
She seems deflated.
I clear my throat and rearrange my desk.
"You're a good fighter, where'd you learn to do that?"
She smiles down at her book.
"I'll have to give your lack of skill the credit for that one"
I laugh quietly as the teacher begins the lesson.
Hazel shuffles closer to me and heat tickles my neck.
"So um, are you, I mean, do you have.."
I raise my eyebrows expectantly.
"Do you have a boyfriend, or, at all, maybe?"
Her eyes trace up my face to meet mine.
I shake my head.
"No"
A smile grows on her face but she quickly hides it.
"Not right now?"
"Nope"
"So like ever?"
I smile.
"Do you have a boyfriend Hazel?"
I realise my mistake instantly.
"I mean, do you-
"No"
She shakes her head and smiles. For some reason I'm happy. I note that my friend not being in a relationship has never been something that brings me joy.
We smile silently for what feels like only a few seconds before we're rudely interrupted.
"So who's taking her home then?"
I whip my head around quickly at Mr Mitchell.
"W-
He thrusts what looks like a baby doll towards us.
"Who's taking her, come on, we have things to get on with?"
Hazel grabs the baby quickly.
"Sorry sir"
She mouths what the fuck to me and I laugh and take the baby from her, faux coddling it.
"I feel like we missed something important there"
