"Okay campers, it's time to outline our rules for the trip"
The annual senior 'camping trip' starts today. It runs from Friday to Sunday on the last weekend of September.
Josie, PJ and I have to make up our team to four and we chose Hazel.
"First of all, choose someone to take responsibility of the map, do not split up as a team, make it back to the site by-
She checks her watch.
"5:30. Oh! And no male-female tent sharing"
"What about female-female"
PJ nudges Josie and gives a not to subtle wink.
For some reason I glance at Hazel, she's already looking at me and I quickly look away.
"Right! Off you go!"
A whistle blows and we're off.

"Wait is north up or down?"
Hazel stumbles in-front of us squinting and spinning the map.
"Just give it to me, ugh I knew we shouldn't let her do it!"
PJ goes to grab it but hazel pulls it away from her.
"No"
PJ grunts and goes to take it again.
"Come on guys I don't think-
Josie begins but PJ interrupts her.
"Give it to me!"
"No!"
PJ come behind hazel and tries to grab the map but she bends away from her. Their shouts and ruffling of leaves fill the silence and Josie steps towards me.
We both wince as we watch them fight.
"Guys come on!"
"Shut up Josie!"
They exclaim simultaneously. As they turn to us, a gust of wind smacks them in their faces and the map floats over their heads.
"Oh fuck!"
"No"
"PJ grab it!"
All eyes widen and we all begin to run, chasing the map.
"I'm fucking trying!"
"Hazel!"
"It's right the-
"I think I've got it! Wait! No!"

-time skip-
PJ slumps down against the tree opposite me.
"Time me"
She points to Josie.
"12:30"
Her head slumps into her hands.
"So we have spent an hour chasing a fucking piece of paper-
She kicks the ground.
"And we have another five to find our way to a campsite"
"That could be anywhere"
I mutter.
"Very helpful thank you"
She snaps.
"Hey"
Hazels brows furrow and she glared at PJ.
PJ jumps to her feet.
"Hazel look at this situation"
She stomps.
"Yeah well it's not her fault"
"Oh trust me, we know"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Hazel stand up facing her now and Josie and I glance at each other with fear.
"It means that it was you-
"Okay!"
I jump to my feet and flung my hands out.
"Let's just get moving!"
I walk in between them and grab their wrist, pulling them both behind me.
"But-
"This way!"
I cut them off and stomp my way through the path of leaves and mud.
Every direction looks the same. The only thing changing is the lighting. With every step, the trees shadows get bigger, leaking over everything else. The sun begins to obscure behind leaves and clouds and a rain droplet pricks my skin.
"Rain"

-let me know if this is too slow burn guys, also if the chapters are too short-
-I can speed up the process, I'm more a fan of tension building tho 🤭-
