Flowers

My mum is polite but I can see her look whoever it is up and down. A hand reaches out In between them and I could tell those rings from a mile away.
"Hi, I'm Hazel!"
My mom doesn't take her hand. She simply nods.
"What can I do for you Hazel?"
Hazels hand falls slowly back to her side.
"Is she awake?"
My mom creaks the door open and Hazel peers over at me. She smiles and gestures to the flowers in her hands. I smile back. For some reason my eyes begin to water and my hands grip the duvet.
"Mom let her in please"
She hesitates but slowly steps out of the way. Hazel rushes over to me and pulls me into her arms. I breath deeply. I breathe in a way I only can when she's around. My tear rolls down my cheek and I take her in. The soft smell of her hair and the fresh cotton of her clothes brings the first smile to my face since I regained consciousness. She tries to pull away but I grip her tighter. I need her. Just her. Hazel and I, together, alone, forever.
Eventually I let go and she thrusts the flowers towards me as she takes a seat on the side of the bed. I laugh and blush softly.
"Thank you Hazel"
It's a bouquet of wild flowers, wrapped in brown paper and tied with a string.
"There's lavender in there-
"Her favourite"
My moms cuts Hazel off and we both turn to face her. She remains at the door, with a hand gently rubbing her neck. Her expression is completely flat except for her eyes. They're heavy and sad. I see her gulp. Hazel smiles and laughs.
"She's the only person I've ever met who wears lavender perfume"
My mum laughs. Her expression warps completely.
"I bought her that. Last Christmas. I thought it could be our thing."
She smiles at me. It's not a happy smile. It's the kind of smile that lazily attempts to mask how we really feel. A tear rolls down her cheek. In that moment, she knows. She knows I didn't have a boy asking me to homecoming. She knows there's no one to call. She knows they're already here.
I don't say anything and neither does she.
"Mom I-
"You're hungry aren't you. It's nearly lunch time-
She looks at her watch frantically.
"Mo-
"Your father and I will go get you something"
She grabs her bag from the chair and ushers my father towards the door. He still doesn't look at me.
"Can we just talk"
"After darling"
My dad exits the room and she turns back to me.
"After okay"
Her eyes move sideways.
"Hazel, you look after her for me. Okay?"
Hazel nods.
"Okay okay okay....
My mom mutters to herself softly as she nods and leaves the room. When the door shuts and Hazel turns back to me and sighs.
"We'll have to get these in some water-
I grab her collar and pull her towards me, kissing her softly. My eyes flutter closed and I sigh. It's a slow and innocent kiss. My hands cup her face and I pull my lips from hers after a few peaceful seconds. My forehead rests on hers and we both breathe softly. My eyes remain closed as she caresses my thigh over the sheet.
"You okay?"
"Will you be my girlfriend Hazel?"
Her hands freeze. I pull away and look into her eyes as my hands cup her face. I wait silently for her answer. I could wait all day, all year, my whole life if she needed me to. As long as I could be around her. As long as I could breathe her in and run my hands through her hair.
"Yes"
She smiles. I smile. Both of our smiles grow.
My heart beams and threatens to jump out of my chest into her hands.
"Yeah?"
She nods.
"Yes"
"Seriously?"
She rolls her eyes and grabs my hands.
"Yes, I will be your girlfriend"

"Yes, I will be your girlfriend"
