I pull my blanket tighter around my shoulders and shiver. It's so bloody cold in here. I pull my legs up and rest my chin on my knees. I've been here for hours. The workload for school seems to have tripled this year and I've been spending my weekends tied to my desk. I chew my pencil and brush loose hairs behind my ears.
Bang. I flinch.
I spin around in my chair and plant my feet on the floor. There's another bang from the other side of the room and I turn to face the strange noise. I get up now and follow the incessant banging. There are pauses between them and I wait for the next before continuing. When I make it to the other side of the room I notice it's coming from my window. I peep through the curtains and I notice the entire street is concerned in a white blanket. No wonder it's so cold. A stone smacks the window and I flinch.
"What the-
I open the curtains wider and peer out and down to the drive. My smile flares when I see her. My Girlfriend.
I smile down at her and she smiles back. She waves both hands and I pull the window open and peer over the window sill.
"Is there a reason you aren't knocking the door!"
She jumps and waves her arms.
"It's romantic!"
"Oh yes! I love having rocks thrown at me!"
"Come and play in the snow! It's so thick! I can barely walk!"
I laugh at her innocence. The innuendo remains completely foreign to her.
"Oh I'm sure it is!"
She whoops and stomps in the snow.
"I'll be down in two seconds!"
"I'll be counting!"
I slam my window shut and rush to my wardrobe. With my welly boots, puffer, scarf, hat and gloves I run down the stairs and out of the front door. I run around the side of the house, stumbling in the snow. When I see her she's kicking the snow with her hands clasped behind her back.
"Hazel!"
She looks up immediately and opens her arms. I run towards her and jump onto her, wrapping my legs around her waist. She grunts and laughs, squeezing me tightly.
"I've missed you"
She mumbles and I chuckle. I pull out of the hug and face her, her cold nose touching mine.
"It's been two days"
"Two days too long"
I cup her cheek and kiss her softly. The kisses are slow and long and I sigh into them. My feet drop to the ground and she grips my waist. After a few minutes I pull away softly tap her cheek as she smirks.
"Don't look at me like that Hazel"
"Why not?"
I roll my eyes and step away from her. She goes to grab me but I step further.
"Hey!"
She steps towards me again and I bolt. She chases me, stumbling and falling in the snow. I laugh at her and run circles around her.
"You bitch"
She groans.
"You snooze you lose"
I turn to run away and as I do I stumble over her foot, splatting into the snow beside her.
"Fuck"
I roll from my side to my back with a thud and she bursts into laughter. I smack her arm but she continues to laugh, clenching her stomach.
"Calm down it's not that funny"
I roll my eyes and try to conceal my smile.
"I can see you smiling"
I shake my head no and turn away. Her laughter dies off and we both lie there, staring up into the sky. I breathe deeply and splay my limbs out. I reach over and touch my fingers to hers. She looks back with a smile and I do the same.
"Angel competition?"
She wriggles her eyebrows.
"Oh you're on"-time skip-
"Mines way better"
I scoff. We both stand over them with hands on our hips.
"Yours is weirdly short"
She scowls at me.
"Angels can be short"
I shake my head and tease her.
"Not that short"
She points to mine.
"Well what about that wing? where's the top of it?"
"Don't bring up her trauma like that Hazel. You don't what she's been through."
She raises her eyebrows at me and I cross my arms in front of my chest and shrug.
Her eyes soften and her eyebrows knit together. She blinks slowly and steps towards me. My arms fall to my sides and I look between her eyes. She reaches down and grabs my hands and rubs my fingers softly. She looks down at them and my heart begins to shudder. There's a heaviness in the air between is that wasn't there before.
"Is everything okay?"
I tilt my head to the side. Hazel nods, smiles and looks back up. She sighs.
"Everything is perfect"
I nod in agreement and clasp my hands behind her neck. She places her hands on my hips and traces small circles with her pointer finger. She opens her mouth. Then stops. Opens. Closes. The anticipation causes me to transfer my weight from one foot to the other. Her eyes flicker around me and eventually make their way back to mine. I fiddle my fingers and my mouth goes dry. Her fidgeting is making me anxious. I breath out and a gust of cold air blows between us. I giggle and she watches me intensely.
"Wh-
I begin but she cuts me off.
"I love you"
I swear the snow stops falling for a second, frozen into suspended icicles around us. A surge of panic rushes through my frozen toes to my reddened nose. But it stops there, not making it to my head or my heart. They are both preoccupied. With loving Hazel. And having to tell her.
"I love you, Hazel"
She breathes deeply, relief flooding her eyes and her smile returns. That damn smile. She steps forward and brushes my hair behind my ear with an icy cold finger.
"I'm gonna kiss you now if that's alright?"
"Oh that's totally fine with me"
