I spot Josie and PJ on the bleachers and climb up to them and sit down behind Josie.
"You don't actually think Jeff is gonna like, smash you into little pieces do you?"
Josie turns glares at me on the bleacher behind her.
"You know, like the, the conical flask"
PJ sighs.
"Read the room"
"I'm sorry, Josie"
Josie gulps and looks around in fear as if Jeff is stalking us.
I can't believe they actually ran over him. I walked home last night after the fair. PJ said her and Josie needed time together. Best friend time. I nodded like I always do and walked home in the cold. I heard they ran over Jeff and then threatened him with their new women's assassin club.
The bell rings and I gulp down the rest of my grapes.
"Bio time"-skip to class-
"Everyone come in, take your seats"
I shuffle between the desks until I get to the back and slide onto one of the stools. I pull my books out of my bag and flip open the textbook PJ leant me.
"Can I sit here?"
I look up at the sound of a familiar voice.
"Hazel"
"Yep, that's me"
She looks around momentarily.
"can I?"
"No"
Her eyes go wide and her face flushed red. I curse myself for trying to be funny.
I laugh bashfully.
"Yeah, sorry, yeah of course"
I shuffle over and she nods and slides onto the stool next to me.
"I was only kidding"
I shake my head with embarrassment.
"You got me good"
She laughs and slumps her bag to the floor.
"I was really panicked for a second there"
She fake hyperventilates and puts a hand to her chest.
"Well I'm sorry for trying to brighten your afternoon"
I say sarcastically with a smile.
"Apology accepted"
She smiles with her teeth this time and it's utterly contagious. She has a pretty smile. The thought dances in the front of my mind and paints my cheeks pink.-end of class-
"Do you understand this stuff?"
I ask, shoving my textbook into my bag.
"What stuff?"
"Like-
I try to scrape anything from my brain.
"I don't know, all of it?"
Hazel holds a pencil in her mouth as she packs her bag.
"Absolutely not!"
"Okay good"
She raises her eyebrows.
"No, not good...I'm saying like it's good it's not just me. Not that I want you confused or-
"Oh I see. You're trying to keep me dumb to make you look better. I see your evil plan"
She removes the pencil and runs a hand through her hair.
"No that's not- that's not what I meant"
"Praying on my downfall"
She places a hand on her heart.
"You know what, you've gone too far. The jokes over. You're beating a dead cow here"
We walk out into the hallway.
"I'm not sure that's the expression"
"Well it's how I express it"
I hold my file in front of me and Hazel places a hand in her pocket.
"Let's see how you express yourself in fight club"
She wriggles her eyebrows and turns to me, walking backwards momentarily.
"Oh I'm not going to that"
"Yes you areeee"
She grabs my arm and pulls me into the gym.
