chapter 31

If clarity's in death, then why won't this die?
Years of tearing down our banners, you and I
Living for the thrill of hitting you where it hurts
Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

YESTERDAY'S UNEXPECTED SEQUENCE of events was the one Klaus had been dreaming of for a thousand years. Well, in a general sense of the wording.

The day he finally wakes up every member of his family, reuniting them all together was one of his lifelong dreams, along with overcoming Mother's curse and killing the Destroyer. A day when he could actually feel like his true self, on a par with the tumbling wolf in his heart, not chased, together with his four siblings, standing side by side, united.

Well, that's obviously not what happened.

The rest of his siblings were awake━Kol and Finn.

Finn, with a furtive face and long hair growing for nine centuries, thrust his dagger straight into hybrid's hand as a greeting. Could Klaus have been surprised? No, of course not. It wasn't that he didn't deserve it, leaving his brother in a boundless slumber for almost a millennium. On the other hand, it wasn't without reason. Klaus never got along with his eldest half-brother, who was always hiding behind their mother's skirt, that ever-simpering sycophant. Like Mikael, he always despised their supernatural existence━where Father slaughtered and consumed his own, Finn just bacame pretentious and utterly dull.

Then Kol, with his waistcoat, which Klaus last saw at 1914's Christmas party, stood proudly, measuring him with that familiar mischievous twinkle in his eye. Kol was the youngest of the Mikaelson men, a two years older than little Rebekah, definitely the wildest card of the Original Family. So, he expected shouting, bloodshed, brawling, and meanwhile, as the youngest brother surprised him when all he did was incapacitate him, allowing the rest to take their anger out on the hybrid. Anger for killing their mother.

But they did not understand. No one understood. He didn't do it out of hatred. No, quite the opposite. Klaus bestowed an incomprehensible love on his mother, as any child would. When you're scared, listen for starlings, Niklaus. That's what she used to say. Wherever you hear one sing, Niklaus, remember I'm with you. Always and forever. Ever since then, when he hears their distinctive singing, he reminds himself of his greatest sin.

Always and bloody forever.

He didn't want that. He didn't know he had done it.  He only woke up after a good minute when he looked down, feeling the wetness on his shaking hands. Seeing his blood-dripping palms, he looked to his right, and there she lay━Esther Mikaelson, pale, motionless, with a hole where her heart should have been.
