From sprinkler splashes to fireplace ashes. I gave my blood, sweat, and tears for this.

Y/n watched as her mom ran on the roofs of people's houses. She ran with such grace, her haroi caught in the wind, and her hair flowing behind her. Y/n wished she could be like her mom when she grew up.  She knew she would. She had to be like her mom.

Her mom had caught up with the demon she was chasing. She jumped above the demon to land in front of him. She dug her feet into the roof and swung her sword. The demon dodged her attack and slashed her mother's arm.

Y/n wanted to cry out. She knew that her mom would be fine though, she had been a demon slayer for years. Her mom had made it to the top of the ranks.

Her mom reacted fast, slashing her sword again. She made contact with the demon this time, but it wasn't quite his head. She managed to cut the demon's torso off, but that wasn't enough. The demon regenerated quickly and clawed at my mom. She jumped back, dodging the demon's attack.

Y/n felt the fear rise in her mom. Y/n didn't know what was happening up there, she didn't know what made her mom so scared.

"Y/n!" Her mom shouted. "Get out of here!"

Every bone in y/n's body was telling her to stay and help her mom, but what could she do? She had no training. She was a weak eight-year-old wanting to see her mom fight.

Despite wanting to stay, y/n followed her mom's command and ran back to their house.

That was the last time y/n ever saw her mom.

~~~~~~
She walked quietly around the village. Every step she took reminded y/n of her mom. The town was small, everyone knew everyone. This made it easier for secrets to get around. That scared y/n. She didn't want anyone to know anything about her. She wanted to stay a secret, but here, she couldn't.
"Ms. L/n!" A familiar voice spoke.
Y/n stopped walking and turned around. A man with messy brown hair and a light green haroi stood in front of her. He seemed to have more grey hairs than that last time she saw him.
"Kei," y/n said.
"Hello, Ms. L/n," Kei greeted. "I was wondering if I could buy something off of you?"
Y/n simply nodded. She wondered what he wanted. He always wanted something different every time he saw her.
"Can I get one of those charcoal pencils that you always carry?" He asked.
She nodded, bringing her bag to the front of her. She pulled out a black pencil and handed it to him. In return he handed her a few cents.
Y/n bowed her head as in gratitude and Kei did the same. This was the point where Kei would talk y/n's ears off until she couldn't take it anymore and she would say she has to get back home.
"You're going to become a demon slayer, right?" He asked.
Y/n nodded. "Well, I heard that Mr. Urokodaki has a new student and he's going to become one!" He exclaimed. Y/n tried to show interest in the subject, but she really didn't care.
Kei went on and on about this new student of Urokodaki's. Y/n didn't get why Kei was so obsessed with the student. They were just like y/n in some way, so what made him so interesting?
"Well, I have to go," Kei said. "See you later, Ms. L/n!" And with that he left.
Y/n continued her stroll around the village. She had sold almost everything that was in her backpack. She was ready to get back home, but someone else wanted to bother her.
"Um miss?" A voice spoke from behind her. She turned around to see a burgundy haired boy.
"Yes?" Y/n replied. The boy stood up tall, but not in a I'm-better-than-you way, more in a I-can-do-this way.
"Are you y/n l/n?" He asked. Y/n replied with a nod. He took a moment before he got the courage to ask his question or at least y/n thought it was a question.
"I'm Tanjiro Kamado, Urokodaki's student," He began. "I was wondering if I could get your advice."
Y/n raised an eyebrow. Advice for what? She is still training to be a demon slayer. How could this boy want any help from her? Maybe he didn't know that, so she kept quiet.
"I'm trying to cut through a boulder," He stopped, maybe thinking of what to say next, but he never said anything after.
"Um okay?" Y/n questioned. Did he want advice on how to cut the boulder in half? If so, she didn't know how to give him advice.
Tanjiro rubbed the back of his head, knowing he was too straight forward. "I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to come off so strong! I just really need advice." He seemed to sink into his own clothes, wanting to hide after his mistake.
Y/n waved him off, "it's fine. If you want advice on how to cut the boulder, I have no clue."
"I'll take any advice you have!" Tanjiro stated strongly.
The girl thought for a second. Maybe she did have advice for him, but she didn't know if it'd be helpful to him in any kind of way.
"I guess be yourself?" She queried. "I mean, don't try to train like someone else, train like you. Don't push yourself too far past your own limits just because someone else is. Make your training, your own training."
Y/n hoped that's what he needed. She didn't know if Mr. Urokodaki already gave him that speech. The quietness made y/n want to shrivel up in a hole and stay there.
But then, Tanjiro's eyes lit up.
"Thank you so much!" He took y/n's hand and shook it. "This is exactly what I needed!"
Y/n let out the breath she had been holding. Thank god that was what he needed.
She smiled, "You're welcome."
They said there goodbyes and Tanjiro was off to put y/n's advice to use.
