“Gemini, I think it's time for us to officially hand over the crown to you”.

Zee said it in a very official, solemn tone, looking at his subordinate with pride.  He had to admit that in no year since he had worked here had he had the opportunity to train such outstanding and talented students who understood everything on the fly and who did not need to be told anything more than twice, and Gemini was not only the son of a woman who had a high  position in their world, but he was also the most talented of them.  No wonder the Council of Two Hundred chose him.

“What?”Gemini thought the boss was joking.  He looked around at the faces of the others gathered in the meeting room, but no one laughed, everyone was serious, even Fourth sitting at his side.  “It's a joke, right?”

“I know you're surprised, so I'll let Max explain everything to you.”

Zee handed this taks to his friend, who stood up from his comfortable place behind the desk slightly to the right of the room, right next to the first of the four large windows.  Max approached Norawit with a roll of paper in his hands, a roll that looked very old, visibly yellowed and slightly frayed on one side.  When Max unfolded it, everyone saw the seal of the Institute reflected in the wax and above it a text written in perfect calligraphy.

“I won't read the whole thing, it would take too long and I don't think you want to hear about it, so let me summarize what you see here.  According to our law, when the previous king of the Bangkok Institute dies, all representatives of each branch of our Institute meet and propose the names of the successor.  You've been learning about the conclave that elects the pope in the Non-Magical world, right?”

A not very loud murmur ran through the room.  Gemini had never seen so many Institute members in one place before, and they were surrounded by at least a hundred people, Magical and Hybrid.  Sitting closest to Gemini was his boyfriend, Fourth Nattawat Puitrakul, his brother First Kanaphan Puitrakul, First's fiancé Khaotung, and on the other side NuNew, Nat, Fluke Natuoch and Cooper Patpasit.  Those gathered were dressed quite casually, each in their own style. First conjured up identical purple highlights in his and Khaotung's hair.

“Exactly.” Max glanced briefly at the scroll in his hands and continued in a calm, monotonous voice.  “During the meeting of representatives, each of them wrote the name of their candidate on a piece of paper.  First, we obtained a very long list, from which in the second vote those who didn't exceed a certain percentage threshold were eliminated.  As you can see, fair choices.  A lot of people mentioned you, Nattawat and Kanaphan, among the candidates were also Fernando Alonso and Harry Styles.  In the last vote the difference between you and Mr. Nattawat was three in his favor, but Mr. Nattawat waived his claim to the title.  Thus, you have been elected King of the Knights of Light, Mr. Norawit”.

Gemini was speechless.  He held his breath, although he didn't realize he had done so until Fourth nudged him in the shoulder and whispered into his ear, tickling him with his breath:

“Don't forget to breathe, Master Norawit”.

Gem took a nervous breath, feeling the eyes of everyone in the room, and with difficulty forced out one question.

“But w-why me?”

“Master Norawit, you come from an eminent family that has worked devotedly for the Institute on many occasions, you are young and talented, you have all the skills needed to run such a serious Institute, and in the face of danger you have shown extraordinary even for  a creature of magical courage.  When you were willing to sacrifice your life to protect beings who are not even aware of our existence, you showed us that every being with a good heart and pure intentions is equally deserving of our care and protection, regardless of whether they believe in  our existence or not”.  Nat explained to him excitedly.
