Three words.
Teddy Bear Photos.
You had amassed quite a collection yourself, and the mutant who helped you, and who's number you received, had an even bigger collection than you.
Occasionally you'd receive a picture of a cute teddy bear that he texted, while he held it in his hand.
However, the first conversations was very confusing.
You'd gotten home alright, and had been absolutely exhausted. You had a nightmare about the crash, per usual, but you woke up to an unfamiliar chime.
"???: Say, Miss, did you get home alright?"
You shrieked, near Yeeting your phone as you fell from your desk chair.
You paused, realizing that this person was in your contacts, but without a name.
Your shoulders quivered, sighing and realizing it was that guy who helped you.
"Y/N: mhm, I did. Thank you...uhm, I never asked your name...?"
You sent it, still nervous, unsteadily standing and sitting on your bed now.
The dots indicating his response showed up on screen.
"???: I'm Raphael. My brother's call me Raph."
You smiled, and started putting in the name as his contact name.
"Raphael: So uhm...I'm glad you're alright. My friend April said it's a school day, I'm not interrupting you in class, right?"
You smiled at the consideration, your legs still quivering as you forced yourself to walk to the kitchen.
"Y/N: No, it's alright, I'm homeschooled, so you don't need to worry about that. I can't handle normal school...Memory ruins the learning when I'm talked to."
You winced, wishing you hadn't given that much away. Yet, Raphael seemed unbothered.
"Raphael: Aw, that's cool. I'm homeschooled too!"
You lit up. Really? Someone else was homeschooled? Like you?
You felt a lot more comfortable now, shakily settling into a chair with a cup of orange juice and some granola.
You scooped some yogurt out as well, and then continued talking with your new friend.
"Y/N: What's your favorite school subject? I'm kinda bad at everything, but I like creative writing. Poetry and music help calm my nerves."
You tapped your fingers to your spoon while you ate and waited for a reply.
The three little bubbles were moving still.
"Raphael: uhhhh...Self defense?"
An interesting response, but you knew some curriculum did have that as an option. You just couldn't bring yourself to learn to hurt others, even out of defense...
"Y/N: That's cool. I could never learn how to fight..."
Raphael was quiet and took a bit longer to respond this time.
"Raphael: I'm sure if you wanted to you could, but I'm guessing you don't."
You chuckled weakly, not surprised that came across even with a text. It was true, so you just sent a thumbs up.
"Y/N: I also like my home economics class. I learned to sew and cook. I made a bunch of teddy bears when I was getting used to sewing. I named one of them Vincent, because I gave him swirly painted star button eyes. I had to paint them to look like mini 'starry starry night' painting's myself!"
This got an immediate response.
"Raphael: You know how to sew teddy bears?! I love teddy bears! I have a collection!"
Before you could even respond, three photos came in of a shelf of teddies.
You smiled warmly.

That was how the teddy bear photo texts became a constant. When you were struggling with a lesson, you'd text Raph, and he'd send you a picture of a teddy bear holding a sign that read 'you can do it!' And his hand giving a thumbs up.
It was comforting, and it was enough to motivate you. You were very glad you went to the library that day, and were very glad to make such a Nice friend.
When he mentioned he had a rough day, you'd quickly put together a sign and make a teddy hold it, taking a picture as well.
Raph as a friend, meant a big deal to you. You wanted to show that.
And you think you did a pretty good job.
