You hadn't expected that when you came home, your parents would be seated on the couch with Casey. You hadn't expected him to be here at all, you just wanted to collapse into a bed and sleep until the weekend. Fate had other, more annoying plans for you.
Your parents smiled at you, noticing your presence in the foyer. "Oh! Hi, Y/N!" Casey smiled, you clenched your fist around your backpacks straps, and your other around your notebook, arms shaking.
That pesky little sewer rat just won't leave you be! What's so great about you that it entails him to follow you and appear when you're feeling antisocial?! Sure, sometimes, it was sort of okay, having him around, but why now?!
"...Why is he here?" You ignored him and turned to your parents, glowering at them. They chuckled warmly. "He appeared outside, the little sweetheart came to visit you, but when he realized you weren't here, he asked if he could wait outside! Can you believe that? Honey cakes, did you never let your friend inside?" Your parent that had made their signature cake asked, pushing back their silver striped hair with their dangly ruby earrings.
You clenched your jaw. "He's not my friend, I met him on accident! He just keeps showing up and bothering me when I'm tired and-" you froze, realizing how horrible that sounded, and you shrunk away, recognizing the words from the people who used to pick on you.
You didn't wanna be like them..
You took a deep breath when your other parent gave you a concerned look. "I'm sorry, Casey, I didn't mean to get upset." You said, hanging you head. He frowned, looking hurt still. "I...Just don't really make friends. I'm not saying you aren't one, I just don't have any..." you struggled, getting sweaty and uncomfortable. "I mean, I worry about you, so clearly I care-" you were tripping over your words and facepalmed. "Okay, we're friends, that's a better label, yeah, fine, I'm sorry I yelled at you, Casey." You shook your hands frantically, trying to clear your rambling. "I told you, Alex!" "Be quiet, Rory." Your parents bickered over Casey.
Rory liked baking, and Alex had a tendency to like the natural a bit more, and made salads, almond milk, and lemonade a lot.
"...We're friends?" Casey lit up, and you blushed uncomfortably. "I suppose...say, Is that cake open to everyone, or..." you trailed off, setting your things down and leaning over Rory with a hopeful smile, feeling a bit more relaxed. They laughed and ruffled your hair. "Wash your hands and you can have some, Y/N." They nodded. You smiled, kissing their forehead. "Okay, thank you." You hugged your other, tall parent's shoulders and scampered away.
"So, Casey told us you met him awhile back, on the way home. In the dark?" Your parents called. You grimaced. "He tripped and knocked me over. That's how he met the weird lady." You laughed, grinning, shrugging to yourself as you came back to get your slice of cake. "I see, so how was work today?" "They took the ad writing, said it was good, so I came home, but the subway was a mess, some guy was staring at me the entire time." You shuddered, still feeling the uncomfortable gaze boring into your back. "Oh, Baby, why didn't you call us?" "Why didn't you FaceTime so I could yell at him?" Alex added over Rory, glowering again. You chuckled warmly and sat on the loveseat across from the three. "Well, it seemed like a poor choice, because he'd see your phone numbers, and track us down." You said, shrugging.
They both nodded. "But what if you got kidnapped?" "Kidnapped?!" Casey blurted, panicking now, now both your parent's gazes were on him. They smiled. "You could bring Casey with you!" Rory giggled, clapping. "What? Bring him with me to work, or the subway?!" You stammered, startled. "Why not both?" "He's dressed like a futuristic hobo from an anime convention!...uh, no offense?" "Oh none taken, April said the same thing, but, um...what's an anime convention?" He asked. You shrugged. "I hate them, I went to one, and had a bunch of imbeciles hooting and whistling at me. I haven't gone to another since." You stated, grumbling at the memory, and also recalling people calling your costume stupid.
Casey just looked lost. I guess no one told him what that meant...
"They were being inappropriate about her costume, sweet pea." Rory told him. "Oh! That's creepy..." he muttered, looking uncomfortable and sympathetic.
You chuckled.
"So, what'd you all talk about?" You smiled, lifting an eyebrow. "Well, they asked me my name, and I told them, it's Casey Jones." He said, nodding and smiling back, eating some cake. "Did you mention the future, or...?" You said nonchalantly, making him choke a bit. "Uh-no! That's not-CHC-" he smacked a fist to his chest frantically. "It's classified!" "Future? Ohhh! Are you dating?!" You shook your head with disappointment. "No. Friends. Friends, parents, we are friends. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. And for now, that's it." You snipped. They frowned, and Casey looked lost. He clearly didn't know what dating was either...
Wow, the future was incredibly sad.
"He's from the future." You said blatantly, making Casey go pale. "Y/N, WHY WOULD YOU SAY THA-" you smirked as both your parents nodded, knowing full well what New York had a tendency to have. First mutants, Then Aliens, now a time traveler. "That makes perfect sense, sweetie, never be scared to talk about who you are! We're a very inclusive family." Rory patted his head sweetly and you cocked an eyebrow smugly at his disbelieving expression.
"It's true. Very New York to be from a lost timeline." Alex nodded. Casey looked to you, the back to your parents. You just nodded.
"Yeah, my parents are cool, yeah? Well, after being attacked by mutants and aliens, anything is possible." You snickered, shrugging.
"What else did you talk about?" "Well, apparently he's a ninja! Sounds exciting!" Your parents chuckled, you smiled as Alex went to make some lemonade to wash down the cake.
"You want help?" You smiled. "No, keep talking, it's comforting!" They chuckled, nodding. You nodded back.
You kept all talking with Casey, your new friend, until he had to go. Your parents hugged him goodbye and you were just gonna wave and leave, but got a disapproving response from your parents.
You offered him a hug and he lit up, near-tackling you with one, smacking you in the cheek with his head when he hugged you. He was absolutely unbothered and you were pressed against him awkwardly, because of his height. He's surprisingly Tall...!
You waved him out, surprised how quick he let go, and he grinningly reciprocated with an intensely excited wave in response, then practically leapt down the stairs.
—
You had no idea how excited he was when he told his masters how the girl who he met said he was a friend now, and even gave him a hug. You never even knew as you curled under your covers with a tiny smile.
Today...wasn't bad...not bad at all. Definitely worth the work done.
