Before the War, a wall was built around Chicago. The city was divided up into 5 factions, in order to keep the peace.

Abnegation, the selfless. They blame selfishness for human natures errors. They look after the factionless, supplying them with clothes and food. They are also trusted to run the government.

Erudite, the intelligent. Who blame ignorance on the start of the war. They have the brains. The doctors, nurses and scientists.

Candor, the honest. They blame duplicity and deception for the war. Believing dishonesty is the key fault In human nature.

Dauntless, the brave. Who blame fear and cowardice for the start of the war. They are the soldiers, the police, who protect the city.

And amity, the kind. Blaming violence for human natures faults. They grow and tend to the crops that feed the people inside the city.

Aurora Vilana always knew she didn't fit into her faction, Amity. Her heart always wanted more, and she knew she couldn't find it here in the fields outside of the fence. She lived for the rush of adrenaline, to feel alive.

Aurora was born into the Vilana family, her mother Hermione Vilana, her father Robert Vilana and her older brother Leonardo Vilana. They were a sweet and loving family and she wouldn't trade it for the world. Her family lived in a housing unit near the Amity compound, her mother, being Johanna's right hand woman in leadership and her father running the fields of crops. Leo had just turned 17 and found an interest in cooking after his initiation.

Leo was the golden child, they were equally loved, but Aurora knew that she didn't fit in as well as Leo did. After deciding to stay in amity after the choosing ceremony, her parents began to treasure Leo a fair bit more, Keeping the family legacy going or something like that. Auroras parents knew that she was very uncertain in the person she was going to be, but knew that she would pick what felt best for her, and they wouldn't be mad at her, the amity in them.

Aurora felt uneasy every time someone would mention the upcoming aptitude test, it made her palms go sweaty and her cheeks would begin to flush. Only because she knew that the best thing she could do for herself was to leave.

The whole faction system made Aurora angry. Why should one test decide the fate of a 16 year old? Aren't they too young to be making such a life changing decision, leaving their loved ones behind? She didn't agree with it, and she never would. Aurora knew she could never change the way her city worked.

"Aurora, come dinners ready!" Her mother called to the fields just out side of the compound. She usually found herself pondering through the array of knee-high daisy's, picking a few for her and her mother to make daisy chains after dinner. Aurora was quick to make her way towards the dining area, she was relatively hungry after skipping lunch earlier to go for a walk.

"Come Aurora, sit next to your brother." Her father spoke. She was quick to take the seat on the bench next to Leo, giving him a playful smile, before begging to load her plate up with food her family had collected before hand.

"Are you nervous for tomorrow dear?" Her mother asked breaking the silence at the table. Leo almost chocked on a bit of bread he was eating at the mention of the test. He knew Aurora was not excited for it.

Aurora rolled her eyes and took a deep breathe in before looking up from her plate to the eyes of her mother. "I don't really want to talk about it mother, what ever I get is whatever I get." She replied.

"Well you already know that no matter what you decide to choose, we will forever love you." Her father said supportingly. Aurora knew she was loved, and it made it so much harder to think about leaving them.

"Thank you" she replied simply.

"Well I totally won't miss you" Leo said playfully, trying to lighten the mood.

"You and I both know well that you would miss me, that is if I am to leave amity in the first place." She replies with a cheeky glare to her older brother.

After dinner Aurora makes her way to check up on the horses one last time before heading to bed. It was a habit that she had picked up at a young age, the barn made her feel warm and comfortable. As she walked through the main corridor of the barn with a lamp to check one last time she noticed a ruffling in the bay of one horses stable.

"What is that?" As she opened the stable door to take a closer look, her brother jumped up and yelled. "Jesus Leo you scared the shit out of me!"

Leo bursted out with laughter as he bent over resting his hands on his knees. "You should've seen the look on your face, priceless!"

"I hate you" she replied.

"No you don't"

She knew it was true, she could never hate her best friend. "Whatever" Aurora rolled her eyes and turned to walk away. Leo quickly following behind her, closing the stable door behind himself.

"Hey, you know you can talk to me, what is going on?" Leo asked his red headed sister.

"Nothing, I just don't know what to do, I don't know what to choose" Aurora replied quickly looking up to her brother, who returned a look that made her think he didn't believe her, which he didn't.

"I know you, you don't belong to just amity, your too adventurous to stay here and pretend to be kind 24 hours a day, 7 days a week" her brother said comfortingly.

"You did it"

"That's because i like it here, i feel safe and I have my family, that's all that matters to me"

"Oh Leo, you really are too pure for this world" Aurora agreed, her brother knew her better than anyone else and could read her like a book, she wasn't going to argue.

Leo smiled at her. "Come on, let's go" he said as he waved his hand back towards the compound, indicating to go to bed. "you've got a big day tomorrow".

Aurora knew he was right.
