I follow Lindsey through our floor as she saunters to the cubicles full of chatter and laughter. "Girls," Lindsey calls, and they turn to her. "This is Naomi. She's going to be hanging out with us for a while."
A black haired woman gasps, smiling. "New girl, right?"
I smile, fidgeting. "Uhm... it's Naomi."
"Right. Sorry. That was probably rude to call you." She winces.
"Well, it's only rude when she says it." I look at Lindsey.
"We're past that now. It's just a...thing of the past." She smiles.
A dark-skinned woman, her burgundy hair in braids, stands up. "I love that shirt. Where'd you get it?"
"Uh, Rhys...gave it to me." I begin to feel like I'm in a spotlight, and I hate it.
"I heard a rumor that you and the boss had a fling going on." The black haired woman comments. "Is that true?"
I huff a laugh. "God, no. You guys can have whatever shot you want at him." I hold my hands up.
"We should go shopping sometime." The dark-skinned woman says excitedly. I still don't know their names.
"Uhm...sorry, what are your names?"
"Right." Lindsey says. "This is Sierra," She points to the girl with braids, who raises her hand with a smile. "And Mandy." She points to the black haired girl. "Short for Amanda."
"Ah." I nod.
"It's typically just us three. The other women don't particularly seem to like us." Sierra comments.
"Or they're jealous of us, for whatever reason." Lindsey shrugs. "Mason doesn't hang out with us, aside from outside of work."
My brows furrow. "Mason? As in Mason Felps?"
She nods. "Yeah. He's usually busy with work, so he doesn't hang out as much." She waves a hand.
"I didn't know he was friends with you guys."
"If you can even consider us friends." Mandy rolls her eyes. "We're more like distractors, rather than friends."
"How come?"
"He doesn't like to talk about it. And he doesn't talk to us except to ask us out to drinks or something." Lindsey answers.
"He drinks?"
"Big time." Sierra tells.
Mandy nods. "Rhys had to lay him off a few times because of it."
"I didn't know that." I mumble.
"Nobody does. Rhys does everything he can to hide the evidence." Sierra shrugs her shoulders, as if it's nothing new.
"So, where'd the boss go?" Lindsey asks, turning to me.
"I sent him home." They all stared at me shocked. "He didn't get any sleep last night. He looked like a mess." I defend.
"And he listened to you?" Lindsey's brows crease.
I shrug unsurely. "I may have guilt-tripped him into going home."
"Honestly, I don't care as long as he's healthy." Sierra admits, holding her hands up.
"Agreed. He would've been a huge ass anyway." Mandy adds on.
"I should get back to work." I check my phone.
Lindsey nods. "You know where to find us."
I nod, walking away. I walk to Mason's desk, leaning on it. "Hey."
He smiles up at me. "Hey. I see you got Boss to come out of his cave and go home." He states. I huff a laugh.
"Yeah, well, he needs the rest. Especially since I'm the reason he didn't go home last night as it is." I mumble.
"You can't blame yourself. He chose to stay."
"Because he's a good guy. He wouldn't just leave a woman here alone. Especially when he knows she doesn't have a ride home." I state.
"That's true." He nods, bouncing his shoulders.
I open my mouth to speak, but I'm tackled to the ground, followed by squealing. I groan before sitting up. "Jesus."
Mason lends a hand down to me, and I take it, allowing him to pull me up. A pink blur jumps up. "Your decorator is here!" Maya throws her arms up, making an uneven L with a a grin on her face. She drops her arms. "Daddy let me come up since I told him I'm helping you."
I nod slowly. "Did you have to tackle me?"
"I didn't expect you to fall." She frowns.
"Well, unlike you, I wasn't a cheerleader back in highschool." I cross my arms, giving her an annoyed look. She shrugs.
"Uhhhh... Who is this?" Mason asks, confused.
I exhale. "Mason, meet Maya. Maya, meet Mason." I introduce them.
"So, this is Maya." He grins, sliding up beside her.
"Do I know you?" Her brows furrow.
"Mason. Mason Felps." He smirks, holding a hand out.
She glances at me, confused, as she shakes his hand. "Maya Chen."
"You know, you are even more beautiful than I imagined you would be." I cross my arm over my chest while placing my opposite hand on my face.
God, give me strength.
Maya's cheeks heat up and she smiles. "Thank you."
"What do you say I take you out sometime?" He raises a brow, and I wince. Worst question to ask Maya Chen.
"Oh, I'm sorry, but I don't do dates." She gives him an apologetic look.
"That's alright." He smiles.
He walks toward me and I wince at him. "Well, I hate to say I told you so, but...." He gives me an annoyed look. "I told you so."
He rolls his eyes, sitting down in his chair. Maya smiles at me. "What's first?"
I smile. "Follow me."
She takes my arm as I lead her to my desk. "That was weird. Don't you think?" She asks, looking at me.
I sigh. "He took a shot, he was rejected. He'll get over it. You're a pretty girl. Can't really blame him." I shrug.
"But he acted like he knew me." She states. "Do I know him?"
"No." I laugh slightly. "He just became enamored in the person I told him about."
"At least I'm not the only one." She smiles. "Gotta tell people about my best friend in the whole wide world." We both giggle between each other. I pack up my purse, tablet, and phone, and we take the elevator down to the main floor.
As we walk out, Maya rambling about how excited she is about the gala, my eyes fall to Kylie, who smirks at me from the front desk while on the phone.
I turn away, following Maya out to her car. We climb inside, then drive off to the decoration store. Maya didn't want to do a phone call, so we're going in person.
Time to see the real Maya Chen in action.
