"Okay," I narrow my eyes at my boyfriend, who's standing beside a shelf. He proposed that we go to the Mall, which I found odd, but agreed. "What did you do?"

He turns to me, confused. "What are you talking about?"

"You've been acting weird all day." I state with my arms crossed.

"What? No, I haven't."

"Really?" I raise a brow. I take slow steps toward him. "The entire time we've been out, you've wanted to go into every single shop in the Mall, and any time I bring up work, you change the topic or try to convince me to stay longer. What's going on?"

He sighs. "Nothing."

"Did the building flood?" I blurt. "Oh, my god. Did that building burn down?!"

"What? No! No! The building's perfectly fine." I exhale in relief. "It's nothing to be worried about, I promise."

"You're talking to a number one overthinker. Telling me there's nothing to worry about, is going to give me something to worry about!" I state, emphasizing with my hands.

"Okay, okay." He places his hands on my shoulders to stop me. He sighs. "I know it's your birthday."

"Oh." I pause. "Hey, that is today." I snort.

"I wanted to get you a present, but I can't figure anything out." He runs a hand through his hair.

I frown. "Rhys, you don't have to get me anything."

"Of course, I do." I roll my eyes, not surprised by his answer. "It's your birthday; you deserve a present."

"No." I say slowly. "It's just another day. Adults don't have parties."

"Doesn't mean I can't get you a gift." He shrugs.

"Rhys, you already give me enough." I reply, exasperatedly.

He sighs. "Fine. Then at least go to lunch with me."

"Fine." I agree. "Where to?"

"What's your favorite restaurant?"

"Don't have one." I shrug.

"How do you not have one?"

"I just don't." I pull out my phone, scrolling through the stores in the Mall. "We could do Subway. That's nearby." He grimaces, and I flatten my lips. "I don't want anything fancy. So..."

He blows out a breath. "Okay. Fine. Let's do Subway." I nod and turn to leave. "After I buy this." He grabs the book off the shelf— Correction: books off the shelf, rushing out of the aisle.

"Rhys!" I call, throwing my arms out. I groan when he doesn't reemerge, chasing after him to the cash register. "Why do you even need those books?"

"They're...for my sister." He shrugs, obviously lying.
