I answer my phone as Maya goes through the different decorations. "Where are you?" Rhys's voice cuts through the other line.
"Decorations. For the gala." I tell.
"Why aren't you at work?"
"I am at work. I'm just not in the building." I state, looking down at my tablet.
"Who's in charge?" He asks, his boss-tone showing.
"Lindsey." I answer.
Maya runs up to me. "Naomi, which is better? Blue ribbon? Or red?"
"Uh— I—" I stammer, unsure.
"Right. You have no taste. Why'd I ask you?" She mutters before running off again.
"Gee, thanks." I roll my eyes.
"Who was that?"
"A friend." I wave a hand in her direction, even though he can't see me. "She's helping me with the gala."
"Where are you? I'll pick you up."
My eyes widen. "Uhm— Why? You-You don't need to do that."
"Of course, I do." His voice sounds unusually close. "Looks like I found you all on my own." I yelp, spinning around and finding him standing with one hand in his pocket and the other holding his phone.
I hang up, then cross my arms. "What's the point of asking me where I am if you already knew?"
"Element of surprise." He shrugs, stuffing both hands in his pockets. "Come on, I'll take you back to the building."
I shake my head. "I can't just leave her here! That's rude."
"Then talk to her. Tell her you have to get back to work." He suggests.
I look at him, annoyed. "I am at work."
"I meant the building, Naomi." My name rolls off his tongue, a bolt of warmth shooting through my stomach.
I huff. "Fine." I stomp away, finding Maya going through different table toppers. "Maya, I need to head back to the building."
Her head snaps to me. "Oh, I don't know if I can leave these unfinished—"
"Don't worry. My boss is here to pick me up." She nods slowly, her mouth making an 'o' shape.
"Okay. I'll see you." She hugs me, and I hug her back before grabbing my bag and walking away. I follow Rhys out to his car and we climb in on our sides.
As he pulls away from the curb, I turn to him, "How come everyone calls you 'Rhys'?"
He glances at me, his brows furrowed. "They don't."
"Yes, they do."
"They shouldn't."
"But I call you Rhys." I state.
