. . .
I arrived in front of the Lab entrance. The paper crane graphic completely formed an abstract pattern on the door, with some traditional patterns and shapes for added flair. The sign read: "Ultimate Origami Lab". I hoped that Foldy would be in there and not in her room, if she is... then it's just me looking at a random door again.
I knocked on the door three times, just to be polite, and surprisingly, I heard someone in there. "Coming." It was Foldy. She opened the door shortly after, and when I tell you she looked tired, I mean it. "Hey, can I come check on you for a sec?" I asked. She wiped her eyes slowly. "...Sure. You're always welcome."
The inside was large, and strangely tall. And judging by the outside, it surely wouldn't fit in the school, might be some strange magic. And resembled a traditional eastern-styled teahouse. A few spots had hundreds of paper cranes hanging from above, I'm guessing Foldy made all of them in her free time.
I sat down on a floor seat, sitting across from Foldy. She poured a small amount of tea into a cup, then handed it to me. "Drink up, I know you're still feeling a bit tired." I calmly nodded. "Thanks." I took a sip from the tea, not my favorite drink, but I drank it just to be respectful. Who knows how long she whipped that up.
"What brings you here?" She spoke up, while folding a paper crane in her hands. "Well, I noticed you being a bit down today." I started. "I know the feeling of losing someone you take great care greatly so..." "Oh, you don't have to come to me at all." She spoke up, finalizing her crane. "You're all set." I glanced at her, confused. "Who are you... talking to?" I asked.
"I like to talk to my finished models when I'm done. It's kind of cute, you see." She shows me the finished crane, it has a few creases, but very little that they could not be seen from afar. "Does it... seem weird to others when you talk to some paper?" I asked, taking a sip of the tea.
"Sometimes." She starts to pick up another piece of paper. "But others find it quite endearing." I looked around at the hanging cranes, why was she hoarding all of these? "What's with all of the cranes?"
She fills up the teacup for me, before starting. "There is this myth that, if one folds a thousand paper cranes..." She holds up a crane on the table. "You can make a wish and it will be granted." "Any wish?" I mumbled. "Any wish you want." She stands up, and strings the crane on the ceiling. "I'm currently on my 827th crane."
"Do you have a wish on hand?" I stood up also, placing my teacup on the table. Foldy thought for a while, before speaking. "I don't, actually. Until recently." She said. "And what is that?" I asked, might've been too personal...
"It's about Teardrop." She spoke up. I perked up suddenly. "I... see. Seeing as you two were close before." "I just want to let her be at peace. To make sure that she rests well in the other side." She monologues. "I helped her many times in those short hours, making up games, eating together, having her go to Tree for extra help... I just want to let all of that effort not go to waste." She wipes her face with her sleeve. "Sorry, I must've spoke too much. I... felt bad for that girl."
"I understand." I sighed. "Are you sure you're going to recover?" I tilted my head slightly. "I'm not certain. But..." She stands there quietly. "I have... booked an appointment for Tree's therapy service." She said. "He said that he can help anytime. Not sure if he can fully help me recover." So Tree has therapy open... Might as well stop by another time.
I looked up at the cranes, cranes with varying colors and sizes. "Look, I'm not trying to be rude but..." I hesitated before I spoke again. "It was bound to happen, one of us was going to die. Loser had the guts to kill her at risk of some motive coming true." Foldy turned back to the cranes, hanging her newly-folded crane onto the ceiling. "But... Why her?"
"Why Teardrop of all people?" She frowned. "Was she just there by-" "Yes, she was there at the wrong time." I promptly cut her off. "Loser could've given that note to anyone. Heck, even I could've received it." She then sat back down at the tea table and grabbed another piece of paper. "... No one should ever have the same fate as her, or even Loser, might I add." She sighed. "He was driven by a motive that threatened to change his life forever, and he killed her. Just to prevent that from happening."
She began folding her 828th crane.
I took another sip of the tea. "But... let's say..." I paused for a moment. "If you fold your thousandth crane, would you think your wish would come true?" Foldy stopped folding, then spoke. "It... would." Then smiled lightly. I put my hand on her shoulder. "I know you would make the right decision." I reassured her.
Foldy then held out her teapot. "Well then, would you like some more tea? To cheer ourselves up."
. . .
After a while, drinking tea and looking at her other creations, it was time for her therapy session. "Oh my, It seems I have to go now." She stood up from her spot and made her way outside, I soon followed. It was a short walk to Tree's Lab, might've been a few doors down.
His Lab door had an abstract design sort of resembling leaves, but a bit subtle. Foldy knocked on the door, and it soon slid open. Opening up to see a large, bright room like that of a glasshouse. False sunlight beamed throughout the room, and it seems that Tree is still occupied with another session.
And I could still hear a part of their conversation.
"...And y'know, there is nothing I could do." A guy in a black suit spoke out, lying on a recliner, his wheelchair beside him. "Oh, are they here for you too?" He turned to us. Tree poked his head up from his notebook. "Ah, yes. We can continue our session another time." He stood up to get 8-Ball up from his position, then placed him on the wheelchair. "Yeah, I don't really care when I come back, thanks though." He spoke up, then rolled his way out of the Lab.
"Greetings, Miss Kirigami. I'm guessing you're here for our session." Tree greeted the taller woman. "And... you're here for an appointment too, Liy?" He turned to me. "I'll give it a think." I mumbled. "Ah! No need for formalities, Mr. Tree." Foldy said. "Just call me Foldy, we're equals now, aren't we?" She turned to rest on the recliner. Tree drank some water out of a bottle, then held up his notebook. "Liy, I'd suggest you go outside. This is a private session, you can come to me when I'm finished with Foldy." He said.
I reluctantly nodded, and went outside to stroll about. Well, I have some time to kill for the meantime. Might get some coffee or two.
Or check up on someone else.
Who knows.
