. . .
"Where are you going? Match!" Ruby yelled out, running after that girl. Her bag almost fell from her shoulder, its strap holding on for dear life. I blindly followed them, all the way up to the second floor, and reaching a lab. I hid behind a wall so they couldn't see me.
Ruby was yelling, almost begging. "Please, Match! We already killed Stapy. So please calm down! I'm also devastated, but it's resolved now!"
"Like- I know he's dead now. But still, he like, killed her. How the fuck am I supposed to like, move on?" Match spat out. I could hear a lab door slide open. "Forget it. Just like, leave me alone."
Then I heard that door closing.
I carefully walked over to Ruby. "Hey. Go to bed." I said to her. "What? Um. Not yet. I'm going to wait for her to calm down." She answered, gazing at the Lab door, adorned with geometric fireworks. "Did Tree send you?" She looked slightly up at me. I shook my head. "Hell no, the guy doesn't want to do his job right now." I scoffed.
"Really...? If you want to talk to Match, then go for it." Ruby said. "And if you don't manage to calm her down, just tell her to see Tree for a session. I'll stay here." I nodded, scanning my Monopad to open the door.
The interior of Match's Lab is like an expansive field, littered with unlit fireworks and materials. But fireworks are fired into the sky in intricate patterns and shapes, and they lit up the artificial night sky. The floor seems to imitate grassy hills, the standard area for your lively summer festival. And yet, this night is not lively at all.
She sat down on the grass, looking up at the sky. She seems to notice that someone entered her Lab.
"Get out. Like, let me be." Match slurred out, done with dealing with all of this. I hesitated to reply as to not irritate her more. "Dude, go to sleep. Huddling in a room won't fix your problems." I insisted.
"What. Are you like, my therapist or something?" She huffed, turning her head slightly to see who she was talking to. "No."
She stared at the empty expanse, the glow of the fireworks lightly tint the grass. I slowly hobbled towards her, then sitting crosslegged behind her in a way.
"Ruby's outside waiting for you y'know. You won't gain anything by sitting your on ass." I scoffed, eyes starting become heavier by the second. Match furrowed her eyebrows, looking at me. "And like, why would you say that?" Her words slowly became overpowered by the loud bangs of the exploding fireworks.
"Just admit you're wrong, just-" I sighed, feeling very tired.
But I need us to have a good night's sleep.
"-She's gone." I boldly stated, knowing the truth that we both know. She lowered her head, seemingly in denial of what she had just witnessed a few hours ago.
Match let out a long sigh. "She's here with me." She held up her wrist, revealing a silver ribbon once worn by Pencil.
"Whatever." I scoffed. "She looks up to you, so I knew you miss her."
She freezes.
"Wha... she always says that. She lies all the time about our relationship." Match slurred out. "If anything, she's the problematic one. After what happened back at school." She huffed. "But I'm not talking about that... like, it brings back some of those memories. It started when I got the dreams."
I looked at her, just as confused as she was. "But she said you were the one pushing her to be like you! Was she lying just for me to pity her?" I asked, the redhead huffed slightly.
"Seems like it. But still, we act like we were like, meant to be."
Strange, such a weird move from someone prim and proper like Pencil. Or... she might not be so proper at all, considering what Match just said.
"Wait... why are you like, even here?" She asked, then widened her eyes. "Don't tell me, you heard that whole thing..."
"All of us heard it! You and Ruby were standing in earshot of the infirmary." I crossed my arms, mentally slapping myself awake.
Match snorted suddenly, possibly laughing. "Blame Ruby, she like, confronted me first." Then she went quiet. "But like, I wouldn't blame her though. I might've made her worried sick about me."
"Now, go to sleep. Now that you think she's here, I bet you will sleep well." I shifted my position to stand, but...
She turned to look at me, yet, with an unreadable face. Shock? Anger? Even confusion?
"Fine. But you must promise me one thing." She fully turned to face me, I hummed to say I was listening.
But trust me, I was trying to stay awake.
"Can you, possibly, get Ruby out of here?"
Huh?
Ruby... why not Match? Or- both? Or does she... want to be with Pencil?
It was like she read my mind, "I don't care if you like, want both of us out. I just need someone to like, stay with my alliance back at school, besides, I'm like, just as much of an asshole as Pencil." She looked at me, with determination? Maybe. But I was still processing about what she just said. Match continued, "And, I want someone to publish her autobiography, just to like, keep her name in the spotlight... like she planned to."
That book she gave me... is that it? "I mean... I have a copy. I could give it to you, if you want." I suggested to her, yet she shook her head slowly. "No. Give it to Ruby instead. Like, I'll cry again seeing her name on the front cover." Her lips curved slightly, dried tear markings decorated her cheeks, ruining her makeup.
"I know like, you're not the girl I could trust on busting us out. But it seems that like, Leafy, Tree and the others do." She fully laid down on the faux grass, looking up at the fireworks and the distant artificial stars. "So, I will tolerate it for now. So like, don't annoy me, 'kay?" She finally smiled after ten minutes of us going back and forth.
"Whatever you say." I smirked, rubbing my eyes. And looked up at the sky. "I'll try my best."
Starry patterns formed in various colors and sizes, it reminded me of the once carefree summer festival days. I looked at her, her figure still as she was mesmerized with the flashing lights. But I had other plans.
"Well! I might as well go to bed." I stood up, brushing the dirt off my skirt. "And by the way, Ruby said that you should go to Tree tomorrow for a session. Just to clear your mind."
"Right." She continued to stare at the fireworks, lost in her world. "I'll go down in a few minutes."
I exited the Lab, expecting to see Ruby standing outside. Yet, she's nowhere to be seen. Hm. Maybe she just got tired and went to bed. I wouldn't blame her. I glanced at the TV windows, the supposed "outside" showed a night sky with only a single streetlight illuminated on the far right screen. Though the actual outside could be much more different.
As I reached the first floor, I immediately see that the lights are out. Why wasn't the second floor dark? Whatever, I'm too tired to ponder on that.
I hobbled my way to my dorm room, and sat at the edge of the bed. I took out Pencil's book out of the bedside table drawer, staring at the pale white cover. Give it to Ruby instead, she said. Huh, I'll just have to tell her tomorrow. But now, I'll have to drift to slumberland.
I tucked myself to bed and closed my eyes.
Sweet dreams.
