3rd POVThe Ark
"Hey, Ab. How's the Chancellor doing?"
Ask me again if he makes it through the night. Who else did we lose?"
"Uh Murphy and Mbege. Both named John." A man says as he pulls up both of the boys vitals, 'Transmission Terminated' repeatedly blinking. "Neither was injured during landing." Kane says with his arms crossed, slight grief shown on his face. He knows the Murphy boy, or knew. He remembers the day that Rowan introduced him as her friend and then two years later, boyfriend. He treated him as his own.
Murphy was a good kid with a bit of mischief, but nothing that got him in trouble. At least not back then. But when he got sick and Alex Murphy was floated when he was caught stealing medicine, Marcus Kane tried to help him in trial but it didn't work. The boy that Marcus and Rowan Kane knew snapped. His behavior began to change. He broke up with Rowan a week before he set fire to the office of the guard who arrested his father, not knowing that Marcus Kane, the man who treated him as his own son, was in the room as well.
"I concur. Something else killed these two. One second, they were fine and the next, bang."
"Then it isn't radiation." Abby confidently says to the two men.
"Come on, Abby. Wishful thinking isn't good science." Kane says blankly as Abby turns to him again, disbelief written on her face. "It's not wishful thinking. One second, fine, the next bang isn't how exposure to radiation presents."
"Well, it could be if there was enough of it."
"If there was enough of it, they would all be dead. Is all your hope gone? Rowan is still alive, she's breathing. Do you not have hope in them? In her?! She's not gone, Kane. Not physically!" Abby raises her voice at him, knowing why he was acting the way he is. She turned away from him when she saw tears forming in his eyes.
"Please let me be right."
Hours later, they were still watching the vitals with hope. Everyone was either sitting down or standing, some walking out and back in every now and then. Everything was calm, Abby believes in her two girls. After Rowan lost her mother, Abby was there to pick up the pieces. She treated Rowan as her own. And to Rowan, Abby soon became like a second mom. And when Rowan was arrested, Abby felt like she failed her. Like she failed Marcus. Like she failed Lilah, her best friend, Marcus' wife, Rowan's mom.
Abby along with everyone was snapped out of their thoughts and tasks when the monitors started beeping rapidly. Everyone snapped to the screens. "What's happening?" Kane asks, quickly running up to Abby who also walked to the screens. Jackson quickly pulls up six profiles. "Vitals are piking rapidly. Jasper Jordan, Monty Green, Finn Collins, Clarke Griffin, Octavia Blake and Rowan Kane." He says as they all look at the six windows.
"Plasma osmolarity are rising and fast. Only for Octavia and Rowan." Jackson announces as Abby shows worry while Marcus is confused. "What does that mean?" Marcus demands to Abby who turns to him with sadness in her eyes. "It means they could be drowning. I can't know for sure but it seems like it. The others could be freaking out, trying to save them or both, which would explain why their heart rate and blood pressure is rising." They both watch the screens in worry, hoping for them to be safe. It kills the adults to just watch and not being able to do anything.
After several minutes, the beeping stops. They all watch as the six kids vitals slowly go back to normal. Abby and Marcus both take deep breaths, relief spreading through their veins. Marcus being more relieved that two important kids in his life are safe. Abby reaches her hand out to Marcus, squeezing his shoulder as if to comfort him. He places his hand on top of hers before walking out the room.
