Shay's POV

"You wanted to see me, Mr. Vargas?" I asked as I entered the office of my boss a little after lunch.

I'd quickly learned that Lucas Vargas was the kingmaker in the office, as his department routinely made more money than any other department in the company, by far. If he liked you, then you were going to go places. So far, he'd seemed to like me, having given me several tasks in my internship that I thought I would have needed more experience to be trusted with on my own. Most of them I thought I'd done pretty well on, though there were a few that he'd pointed out some things that could be improved, and it made me better the next time. I was hoping that was good and showed growth considering I was so new. But if not, I knew I could use this experience at almost any trading house in the world. I'd kept good logs on what I'd done so I could update my resume if I needed it.

"I told you to call me Lucas. Or do I have to hire you to get you to do that?" he asked with a grin. Lucas wasn't a big guy, maybe 5'8" and probably weighed less than Amber. He was very nice, and attractive for a guy. His office wasn't fancy, just a simple glass desk with some comfortable chairs, and a lot of pictures of female hockey players, as he was evidently married to one.

"I'm sorry Mr. Vargas, I think you have to hire me for that." I was kind of joking, but I really did want to impress him, and being polite was one thing I could do.

"I was planning on doing just that." He pulled out a sheaf of papers and put them on his desk while motioning to one of the chairs in front of it. "Have a seat and look it over."

I stepped over and picked it up, looking over the papers. I tried to remain calm as I looked over the document, but it wasn't easy. $180k per year salary, $20k moving allowance, yearly performance bonuses, generous medical and dental plans, and only two days a week in the office unless there were reasons that required us to be there in an emergency. The start date was in just over two weeks to give me time to get settled, and I couldn't believe all of it! There was nothing bad in there, and while Boston was an expensive city, I'd already heard that the performance bonuses in this department were usually more than the annual salary. Much more for the highest performers.

"This is a very generous offer, sir." I had to swallow as I met his gaze.

"It is. I'd be bringing you on as a mid-level analyst. You'd be skipping the junior level, you're too talented already. Truthfully, if I didn't think it would upset a few people, I'd make you a senior analyst to start, because I think you already have the talent. But, once people see what you're doing over the next year, I think I can confidently say you'll be there by your first performance review.

"Sir? Seriously?" I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"How many trading algorithms did you write in the eight weeks you were interning?" I knew this was a question he already knew the answer to, but I was keeping track too. Trading algorithms were what this department did and were key in knowing the most optimal time to trade or buy stocks and commodities. It was something I'd grown to love in college and got a lot of experience here doing them in real life. I remembered several times when guys in college would laugh that a girl was in so many advanced mathematics classes, but I bet they wouldn't be laughing now.

"Ten, sir."

"Exactly, ten. Other people were given the same task for the first six of those just to see how you compared to someone already on staff. On every single one of them, your solution was better than the other people already having experience writing them, and on only one did I think you could have done something better. For the next four, you were the only one with the assignment, and it was just as good. Only one piece of feedback, and two solutions that were even more innovative than I could have done myself. You're very impressive, and I don't want you to leave."
