TW: Blood, Needles

"Wake up, Sencen," you hear. Gethen, the Telepath of your mother's group the Neverseen, has come to lead you to another day of torture.

"Coming," you groan. You walk to the entrance of your prison cell as Gethen unlocks it. He leads you through the all too familiar passageways to your torture room. You've thought a number of times to use your abilities to escape but never went on with these plans.

"Y/n!" you hear your mother, Lady Gisela Sencen, say as you enter the torture chamber. She has her co-leader, Fintan Pyren, with her. He's got a small ball of Everblaze hovering over his hand and you feel a twinge of fear. He, as well as Gisela, knows how much you hate Everblaze. It's nearly killed you a number of times and your mom doesn't even care!

"What torture am I going through today?" you ask sarcastically. The Everblaze over Fintan's hand grows and you shrink back a little. You can feel his anger from where you stand on the other side of the room.

"I'd hardly call it torture," Gisela says.

"Strapped to a table, going through experiments, that your mother will do on your brother that doesn't even know you exist, until they get it right and he has a chance of survival, almost dying twice a week at least, just to get burned later. Definitely not torture. Sorry I made that misinterpretation," you say. A little bit of Everblaze goes to your feet and you quickly jump back to avoid getting burned. You know you have to escape and have learned to block your mind with shadowflux, the unknown sixth element of pure darkness, so Gethen can't read your mind. You have to do it soon but you don't because Gisela put a tracker in your system a while back.

"You know what to do, Y/n," Gisela says, dismissing your rant for now. You sigh and get on the table. Fintan pulls out a needle and you flinch, knowing it's the usual immobilizer used on you all the time. You drift into the immobilization, unable to stop it, and wake up with your ears ringing and emotions swelling in the air around you, radiating from Gisela, Fintan, Umber, Gethen, and Trix.

"How do you feel?" Gisela asks.

"Overwhelmed," you admit.

"With what?" she presses.

"Emotions," you respond. "Particularly one with the urge to shove an arrow of shadowflux into your heart and hope Umber is too slow to stop it."

"Like that will ever happen," Umber snorts.

"You're so cocky," you mutter under your breath. Gethen leads you back to a different room than your usual cell, and there's someone in there already.

"Who are you?" he asks. He's got blond hair, ice blue eyes, and looks like an identical representation of yourself if you were male.

"Y/n," you respond.

"Keefe. Keefe Sencen," he introduces himself. Your eyes glow with hope that you can get out of there.

"Sencen?" you find yourself asking before you can stop.

"Yeah," he mutters, shocked that you are so excited.

"Y/n Sencen," you clarify as your name.

"I have a sister?!" he asks, shocked.

"Twin sister," you correct. "Our parents were ashamed, so our mom took me here when we were just a few months old. She had Gethen erase that particular time from your mind."

"That's a lot to comprehend," Keefe mutters.

"I know. Why are you here?" you ask.

"Protect some friends of mine," he responds. You block his mind with shadowflux.

"You don't have to keep your thoughts under control. I blocked your mind with shadowflux like I do for myself. Gethen still hasn't figured out how to bypass it," you explain.

"Creepy. Get it out of my head," he demands.

"No. Ny the way, you can't lie to an Empath," you tell him.

"You're an Empath? I thought you were a Shade," he acknowledges.

"Both," you respond.

"How?" he asks.

"Our mother likes making her kids extra freaky," you respond.

"Sounds fun," he mutters.

"It's not," you mutter in response.

"I know someone who you would get along with," Keefe says after an awkward silence.

"Who?" you ask, genuinely curious.

"Tam Song. He's another Shade and is really protective of his sister. He dipped his bangs in his melted registry pendant. So did his sister. I think it's supposed to be an act of rebellion against their parents, but I'm not sure. He doesn't trust anyone until he gets a shadow-reading of them," he responds.

"Neither do I," I admit.

"You aren't getting one from me," he says.

"Too late. I can trust you, though. You have a lot of luminescence. You should let this Tam guy get a reading. He'll trust you. You can trust me on that. You can even check that I'm not lying." You hold your arm out to him, and he grabs it. He lets go after a minute, nodding. Your mom comes in then.

"Keefe! Y/n! I wasn't expecting both of you," she acknowledges.

"This is where Gethen led me," you respond.

"It is?" she asks, sounding shocked. You nod. She paces the length of the room while clearly plotting how she is going to punish Gethen.

"Can I go to Foxfire?" I ask.

"And risk having you sell us out? Absolutely not," she answers. You sigh.

"Exillium?" you ask.

"NO!" she yells.

"Okay. Calm down. There's enough anger in this room to cause an army to kill their own people," you tell her.

"Why can't she go to school?" Keefe asks.

"She is untrustworthy!" Gisela yells.

"Yet you trust Umber," you add.

"Yes. She is loyal to this cause and not a prisoner," Gisela responds.

"A tortured prisoner," you clarify.

"You aren't tortured!" she snaps.

"I am! I have the scars to prove it!" you yell. You reveal your many scars from being burned, cut, experimented on, and tortured in general that are all over your arms.

"Woah," Keefe mutters. "That's a lot of anger and tension." He fans the air, and you glare at him. You look towards the door and pick up a piece of rock. It's a sharp piece, too. You put it against your wrist, where the tracker is. You slice your wrist open and take out the tracker. You crush it under your foot and seal the wound with heat. You had always willed the fire to burn you when Fintan would burn you during your torture treatments. You run out the door, Keefe hot on your tail, knowing that you're going to burn the place to the ground. You and Keefe exit and you put the place in a storm of Everblaze, not afraid of it as Keefe leaps you and him to Candleshade, the Sencen residence.

A/N: This is just the first chapter and I will keep writing but I need to figure out the plot of the next chapter. Sorry if it's not good! Bye!
