I, too, sing America.
I am the green grass that blows; the water below
They say, I’m not enough this or that. Not Italian enough, not American enough, Not strong enough, not woman enough.
When I’m the Earth’s daughter, the rivers that paved your ancestors
But I have done enough
And I don’t have to do anything to be enough because I am enough
And grow I will like the grass that you cut.
Tomorrow,
I’ll be a melody that rings through the trees, like caws, & chirps from far away birds
I'll get to sing
When I want to sing any place I go because this is my island, my realmNobody’ll dare
Say to me
“You aren’t American Enough”
Then.Besides,
They’ll see they’re right. I’m not.
I’m Earth Enough.
I’m the whole world’s & that most definitely is enough.
And be ashamed
for thinking there was only one way or one place to be destined to stay.
I’m Earth enough, I deserve to roam the countries, & sprinkle my love like dandelions. Let fairies dust their gold.
And I’ll sing, like the daughter of this Earth does. I’m the world.
I might never be enough in your eyes. But it doesn’t matter. because No matter what.
I’m the World.
So, I too, am America.
This specific poem is inspired by Langston Hughes.
