The leaves muffled Will's and my footsteps as we made our way through the forest, looking for game.

"Robin," Will whispered, pointing at a quivering bush. A soft chewing sound was coming from it.

"Give me the spear," I whispered to Will. He quietly unsheathed the long wooden shaft and handed it to me. I took it and hefted it over my shoulder, ready to be thrown, then trained both eyes on the bush.

After a while a pure white rabbit hopped out and began nibbling at the grass. I took a long, deep breath then threw the spear with all the strength and accuracy I could muster.

Then, several things happened at once.

The spear hit the white rabbit and killed it instantly, Will jumped up like he was frightened, and a man behind me shouted, "HALT!"

I spun around, coming face to face with the prince's royal guard. Immediately, I bolted, my short legs carrying me as fast as any boy could go.

After about 10 metres, I looked back to see Will a bit behind me and the guards pursuing us. Fortunately, they were falling behind.

I let out a whoop and put on another burst of speed. Before long, Will and I were many metres in front of them. Everything seemed to be going well until Will tripped over a root and fell on his face. He attempted to pull his foot out but failed. "Robin! Help!" he screamed. If I ran back to help him, I could possibly get caught as well.

"Sorry, friend!" I yelled back, and continued running.

Soon enough, the guards were on him like a pack of wolves. Two of the guards got him up and bound his hands. The rest kept pursuing me, and must have gotten a burst of adrenaline from catching one of us because they began gaining. I was running out of juice from all the running and walking in the forest all day. My breaths got heavier with every footstep and my feet were getting sluggish and slow. It wasn't long before I befell the same fate Will had, and stumbled. They caught up and wrapped my hands behind my back with a rope, making it just tight enough to cut into my skin.
