This time I strode in the throne room like it really was mine. My hands were still bound, but that did not dampen my confidence for a moment.
When Prince John saw my smile, he frowned and knitted his eyebrows. "What is this?" he said.
"I'm sorry, Prince John, but this boy claims to be the son of the Lord of Locksley."
The prince looked back and forth between my smile and the guard's bowing figure. He let out a high, scratchy laugh. The guard looked up and cracked a smile as I let my shoulders fall.
Abruptly, Prince John stopped laughing and screamed at the guard, "You allowed this little boy to deceive you!? Just look at his smug smile! You are unfit to serve in my kingdom, or even live in it! From this moment forward you are exiled!" The other two guards in the room grabbed him and dragged him out, leaving only a few distant servants, the prince, and I.
Prince John did the most surprising thing yet: he got up and walked so he stood right in front of me. He was so close that I could smell his breath and see all the sunkenness and thinness of his face. Then, he smiled like nothing just happened. The action gave the opposite effect it was supposed to.
My stomach dropped and my smirk was a distant memory. He leaned in, so that his disgustingly warm breath wrapped around my ear. He spoke softly and slowly making sure to savor each word, "I. Know. You. Are. Of. Locksley."
His laughs filled the hall.
