My hands were bound as Will and I were led to the ropes. At first they put Will in front of me, but I struggled and screamed until they switched us. I wasn't going to make Will lead us to our death as if he caused it. It was my fault, and I don't deny it for a moment.
The sight of the gallows made my stomach sick. The ropes hung, flapping in the morning breeze. The sun shined and the birds chirped their song. Showing that the world really didn't stop for the end of ours. I imagined the little boy and girl I had fed and how they will live to see tomorrow, even though I won't.
The thought calmed me down a bit.
The sun glinted off an object to my right. I looked over and saw the blade of a knife poking out of a guard's belt. With Will's life on my mind, I whirled around so that my bound hands were facing the man, and swiftly used the small blade to cut the rope. Then, I only had a few precious seconds.
I faced the guard and punched him in the face with all my strength while pulling his bow off as he crumpled to the ground. I bent down and got off the arrow sheath also, then slung it around my back. Finally, I notched an arrow. This all happened in a matter of seconds.
Everyone was stood shocked. I took advantage and let the arrow fly so that it hit Will's bounds with perfect accuracy and quickly notched another. Before every bow I had tried didn't feel... right, but this one was different. It molded to my hands and felt perfectly weighted. It felt like it was made for me.
I started running forward and, amazingly, the crowd parted. Will and I sprinted from there as if our lives depended on it, which they did.
