My father greeted me with one hug and a whole lot of shouting. But I deserved it. I had disappeared for almost a month with no explanation whatsoever.
Finally, father finished with, "And what do you have to say for yourself?"
I paused before I spoke the story I had rehearsed on the way home, and instead told the true one.
At the end, my father just looked at me and whispered while accenting every word, "How dumb do you think I am? I know when you tell a tall tale, and this one is the worse by far. For the next month, you will do all the chores your servants normally do for you and leave the manor for nothing but your lessons."
I dropped my head and without hesitation said, "I accept this punishment with full responsibility for my actions..." Looking up, I met his eyes. "And father, I am sincerely sorry."
This seemed to be the last thing he had expected.
