Silence crept into the room. There was absolutely no sound. The group was so quiet, you could have heard a pin drop. Then, just as the silence was captured, it was released.
Cameron wailed for the lose of his father. He clutched his sides and crawled to him. He placed his father's head in his lap and stroked his hair. Tears fell onto George's lifeless face.
The group continued to stay quiet, as they watched Cameron weep for his lose. No one made a move to disturb the scene that was unfolding before them. I knew that someone had to speak, so I took a large breath and said, "I'm sorry for your lose." With those five little words, the silence returned.
It was like everyone in the room just took a breath, waiting for Cameron to explode. And, I realized my mistake the second I had spoken.
As fast as a speeding bullet, Cameron reared up and punched me in the face. I stood there in shock, while Daryl ran forward to restrain Cameron. I held my hand up, to show that everything was fine. Daryl released him and stood behind him.
"Cameron, we really are sorry. We gave them all a choice. We warned them. Please, don't make the same mistake," I pleaded with Cameron.
His face was contorted in disgust as he stared at me. "He was the only family I had left, and you killed him. Why?" he blubbered.
I was now feeling extremely sorry for him, and I couldn't help it. I pulled Cameron in for a hug. At first he struggled, then he lost the will to fight, and his body went limp into mine. He cried into my shirt as I continued to hug him.
I watched the faces of everyone in the room, most confused, but there was the exception of a few. Lori, Maggie, and Beth looked touched by the act. Sam, knowing what it's like to be in Cameron's situation, stared at his shoes and had a slight smile on his face.
When he finally stopped crying, I pulled him away and looked at him. "Cameron, I know what it's like to be you. I lost both my parents a long time ago. I have lost more than you can imagine. We couldn't save them, Cameron, I'm sorry. But, we can save you. Please, be a part of our family, and I promise, no harm will ever come to you," I smiled at him and kept my eyes focused on his face.
He stared around the room and then stared at me. Slowly he began to nod and said, "Okay, i'll join you're group. But, don't expect me to become you're best friends. I mean, you just killed all the family I had left. It's gonna take me a while to really trust you," he explained.
I nodded. "Okay, then Cameron, welcome to the..," and that's when I got cut off.
"Wait!" Rick shouted in an authoritative voice. He sulked over to me and stood beside me.
"You should know, we have questions that we ask someone before they join our group," he said and glared at Cameron. I nodded and motioned for him to continue.
He turned to Cameron with a menacing glare and slowly asked, "How many walkers have you killed?" He stared at Cameron, unblinking.
Cameron gulped. "None. I was never allowed to kill them. My dad always did it," he explained to Rick. I watched Cameron's body language, and I could tell he was being truthful.
"How many people have you killed?" Rick asked him. His eyes bared into Cameron's and the room went silent again.
Cameron's eyes got wide, and then he dropped his head in shame. "One," he answered in the smallest voice he could conjure.
Rick looked warily at the group and then dropped his head to whisper to him. "Why?" he asked in a cold voice.
I could hear Cameron sniffling and crying again. "It was my sister. She got bit and no one would accept it. They just kept saying, 'she'll be fine'. But, she wasn't. Every day she got worse and worse. I knew she was gonna die and come back as one of those things. So, one day, when she was at her worst, I put a bullet through her head while she was sleeping. I'm not proud of it, but it was necessary," Cameron whispered into his hands.
Rick stood up away from Cameron and went over to Lori. They whispered for a while and Rick turned to his group. "It's up to you guys," is all he said to them, before he looked at me.
In the end majority ruled and Rick's group was all decided. Rick walked to Cameron and shook his hand firmly. He smiled an infamous Rick Grimes smile and said, "welcome to the family."
Cameron let out a breath of relief and looked at me. I winked at him and clapped my hands.
"Alright, who's ready for a funeral?" I asked.
____________________________________________
The funeral was short and sweet. We gathered the dead and Cameron said goodbye to all of them individually. His goodbyes were small and silent. We dragged the bodies out into the woods and set them to flames.
I knew everyone was looking to Rick and I, to figure out what exactly we're gonna do with Cameron. But, we're gonna keep him safe and make him a part of the group. That's what we promised, and I don't go back on promises.
When we settled back inside, I decided it would be wise to divide up parts of the food supply. We gathered all the food in the main room, and I had everyone take a set.
"Okay, first of all I just wanted to say that this has been a hell of a day, but we survived. That's always good. Anyway, this has been a bit of a wake up call for me. I know how unpredictable this world can be. We never know when we might be separated. So, I've decided to divide a small portion of the food between all of us. Also, I will be giving you all two bottles of water and a loaded magazine. Now I know this isn't a lot, but it will keep you going for a while. Any questions?" I clapped my hands together and looked at the group. I got blank looks from everyone.
"Well okay then. I think this week is off to a good start," I chuckled and again looked around the room. I again received blank expressions.
Son of a bitch. I do not know what we are all gonna do in this small bunker for the next couple months. I already don't like Carol so, this should be quite an adventure.
