Dani’s P.O.V
I woke up about an hour ago. We are having a group rehab session today but it’s not until later on.
Me and Leah are going to Beth’s to watch the last 16 game of the world cup between England and Nigeria. I grab my bag for after and leave the house.
I arrived at Beth’s 10 minutes later. Leah is already here. I park behind her car. I got out and pressed the doorbell. Viv opened the door not long after. She said “morning”
I said “morning”
We walked through to the living room. Where Leah was sat on the sofa in the middle. I smiled and said “hey”
Leah said “morning, you look tired”
I sat down next to her on the end of the sofa and I said “yeah, I am. I didn’t get much sleep”
“How come?” Leah asked
“I don’t know. Too much on my mind I guess” I said
Beth walked into the living room, gave me a cup of coffee and said “thought you would need this”
“You are a life saver. Thank you” I said with a smile
Beth sat down next to Leah; Viv was sat on the chair. Beth said “Leah was boring. She had water”
I laughed and said “I wouldn’t expect anything else”
Viv turned the tv on and put the channel on that was playing the game. It was just about to start.
I was pretty quiet throughout the whole of the first half, the game was tentative. Beth and Leah were shouting at the screen. I wouldn’t expect anything else with how passionate they are about the lionesses. The whistle went for half time. Beth and Leah got up and left the room.
Viv said “are you ok?”
I said “yeah I’m ok”
She said “are you sure because your pretty quiet and it’s not like you”
“To be honest I’m not ready to talk about it” I said
“Ok. When or if you are I’m here” Viv said
I smiled at her and I said “thank you”
Leah’s P.O.V
Me and Beth walk into the kitchen after the first half of the England game. Beth makes coffee for herself; Viv and Dani and I grab myself another bottle of water.
Beth said “why is Dani so quiet?”
“How would I know?” I said
“Just thought that you might” Beth said
“She said that she was tired so it’s probably that” I said
“Do you think?” Beth asked
“Maybe but we did have a conversation after you and Viv left the other night. She told me that she would fight for us and that she would wait” I said
“What did you say to that?” Beth asked
“That I needed time but I hugged her when she left and I told her that I love her. She probably feels like I’m sending her mixed signals” I said
“You were just telling her the truth” Beth said
“I know. I just feel like I’m being held back by something” I said
“Maybe it’s just not the right time for you two” Beth said
“Maybe” I said.
Beth said “come on, let’s get back. Can you take Dani’s coffee please”
“Yeah sure” I said
We went back into the living room. I gave Dani her drink and sat down next to her.
She said “thanks”
“No worries. It’s just the way you like it” I said
Dani took a sip and laughed. I looked at her with an inquisitive look. She said “you didn’t make this”
I said “how do you know?”
She said “because this was made by someone who knows how to make coffee”
I said “you have drank coffee that I have made you before”
She said “yeah but it’s not as nice as this is” she smiled and winked at me
I feel the butterflies mount in my stomach when she does that.
Dani’s P.O.V
The second half starts. Nigeria is playing well and they are taking out Kiera from the game by man marking her. So, we are struggling to really get into the game. They have a couple of good chances but can’t put them away. Then in the 87th minute Lauren James stamps on one of their players. The ref gives her a yellow card. I said “that’s going to go to VAR. She’s going to get sent off”
Beth said “I hope not”
Leah said “I think she will to”
It took minute or so. Then the ref revealed that there is no yellow card. Decision is red card for number 7 for violent conduct.
Beth said “It’s going to be hard now”
“We can still do it” I said
Not that long after the final whistle went. It’s going to extra time.
Extra time is a bit of a stale mate. I think we played for penalties. I hate penalties. Me, Leah and Beth move to the edge of the sofa. Viv starts laughing. Beth said “what’s funny?”
“You three are. Look at you” Viv said
We all looked at each other. I shrugged my shoulders and said “you would be the same if it was the Netherlands”
She said “yeah probably”
We all went quiet. We are going first.
Georgia steps up and it goes wide. I can’t believe it.
They are next and they miss as well. That was a carbon copy of Georgia’s penalty.
Beth England is next; she is calm and composed and buries it. 1-0 to us
They are next and the player blasts it over the bar. Still 1-0 to us
Daly is up next and she smashes it into the top left corner. 2-0 to us
Then they step up and score 2-1 now
Greenwood is next and is as cool as you like and puts it into the back of the net 3-1 to us
They score the next one. It was actually a really good penalty. 3-2 to us
Chloe Kelly is up next and she blasts it into the top corner. We win 4-2.
Me, Leah and Beth stand up shouting and cheering. Leah hugs Beth and then me.
We finish celebrating and sit back down. Then Viv said “Oh yeah, one sec” she got up and left the room. Me, Beth and Leah looked at each other confused.
Viv came back in holding something. She opened it up. It was the hoodie that Leah gave me after the Euros. Viv said “I found this but I don’t know who’s it is”
I looked at Leah and we both smiled Leah said “it’s mine”
Viv said “oh I thought Dani might have left it”
I said “I did. I’ve actually been looking everywhere for it”
Viv said “I’m so confused now”
I took the hoodie and put it on. Leah looked at me and said “I’m not getting that back, am I?”
I smiled and said “nope. But in all fairness, you gave it to me. So, it makes it mine”
