21. Best friends

Dani's P.O.V

It's been just over a week since we came back from Pre-season training in Germany. Things have been going really well with me and Leah. We haven't spent a minute away from each other.

We are both progressing well with our recoveries.

We just arrived at a wilderness reserve. It's me, Leah, Beth, Viv, Jen, Amber (Jen's partner) and Kim. Beth wanted to do something nice for her Mum's birthday. It's the first one without her. We all just wanted to support her.

Just after we got there, we all went on a nice walk to take in our surroundings. Beth was quieter than usual, but I suppose I would expect her to be. I'm actually worried about her. I was walking behind everyone else. Leah looked behind and slowed down so I could catch up with her.

We were far enough behind the others so they couldn't hear us talking.

Leah said, "what's the matter?" 

I said "Just worried about Beth. I know she doesn't really talk to anyone about her mum. It used to be me, but we haven't been as close as we used to be. I guess we are still trying to navigate being friends again"

Leah said, "what do you mean?"

I said "we know how to be friends obviously we were for so long. I guess we are just more aware of yours and Viv's feelings"

"Babe, I know that you and Beth are just friends now. I know that I don't have anything to worry about. I know that neither of you would do anything to hurt me or Viv for that matter" Leah said

"I just want her to know that she can still talk to me" I said

Leah replied "maybe you should talk to her and tell her"

I said "I will. I actually wanted to ask you something?"

Leah said "ok. Go on"

I said "I got Beth something when we were together, but I didn't get a chance to give it to her. I talked to her Mum before she passed away. She said that she wanted to do it for her, but she never got around to it. So, it's more from her Mum. It's just a locket on a necklace with June's picture in it. Would you be ok with it if I gave it her"

She said "of course. I actually think it's really thoughtful and I know that Beth would appreciate it"

I smiled and said "really?"

"Yes really" Leah said.

Later on, we had eaten dinner after we decided to all sit outside around a fire. Leah was sat one side of me, Beth the other side, Viv next to her, then Jen, Amber and Kim were in-between Amber and Leah.

Beth started talking. She said "thanks guys for coming here with me. I just needed to do something to celebrate my mum's birthday"

Leah said "I'm sure this goes for everyone here. We are here for you to support you with whatever you need"

Beth said "It means a lot. I love you all"

Kim said "we love you to"

We chit chatted for another 45 minutes. Then Kim, Jen and Amber went to bed.

Leah got up went over to Beth and said "I too am going to bed. I'm tired"

She hugged Beth then Viv and came over to me. I stood up I said "I'll be up soon" I hugged her; she pecked my lips then went back into the lodge.

I sat back down. Viv said, "I'm actually going to go to bed to, Beth are you coming?"

She got up hugged Viv and said "I'll be up soon"

Viv said "ok. Night Dani"

I said "night" I got up and hugged her.

Viv went inside. It was just me and Beth left by the fire.

Beth said, "you have been quiet tonight, are you ok?"

I said "yeah, I'm ok. You have been quiet too. You know that you can still talk to me don't you. Like before"

Beth said "It's just hard. It's not that I don't want to of course I do. It's just I don't want Viv and Leah to think that there is anything more than friendship between us"

I said "I get it. I have thought the same thing. But I think that they both know that neither one of us would want to hurt to either of them"

Beth said "I know"

"So, tell me how you're really feeling" I said

She said "I miss her so much Dan, it's just the little things like not being able to hear her voice. I miss the silly texts just asking how I am. I just miss her"

Tears started rolling down her face. I moved my chair closer to hers. I took her hand and said "I didn't mean to upset you. I'm sorry"

Beth said "I think it needed to come out. You don't need to apologise"

"I know that it's hard, to be honest with you. I don't think the hurt will ever go but it will get easier" I said

Beth said, "when will that be?"

I laughed and said "I'll get back to you on that when I know"

She smiled and said, "you still miss Mya?"

I said "everyday" There was a silence for a minute or so. I pulled my hand back and we just sat there then I said "I actually have something for you"

Beth said, "for me?"

I said, "Is there anyone else here?"

She laughed and said "clearly not. What have you got?"

I took a box out of my pocket and gave it to her. She opened it and smiled. She said "Dan, you didn't need to do this"

I said "open it"

She opened the locket she started tearing up again.

I said "your mum told me she wanted to do this before she passed away but she never got the chance. I got it a while ago I just never had the chance to give it to you. But I think it's fitting giving it to you tonight"

She said, "when did you get it?"

"Before we split up. Technically it's from your mum not me" I said

"Either way Dan. You don't know how much this means to me. Thank you" she said

"You don't need to thank me. I'm just glad that you like it" I said 

She stood up and so did I. She pulled me in for a hug. We pulled away she said "I love you, bestie"

I smiled and said "I love you too Beffy. Can we please go back to being best friends now?"

Beth said "you have always been my best friend but yes we will be as close as we used to be"
