- Calum's POV -
I cross the road. I'm an hour late to Mecca, one of my favourite coffee shops. I've just left Primark a minute or two ago, because Sophia had something to tell me. Elena lives somewhere around here and she's looking for me... I hope I see her again. I've missed her so much, it's unreal. I play the next song on my phone; Green Day, American Idiot. I cross the road, humming along to the song. When I'm on the other side, I hear someone scream my name and I whip around to see who it is. The person is thrown in the air and they hit the floor. My blood runs cold as I recognise them. It's Elena... I see the other boys race over to her as the driver gets out the car to see the damage he's caused. I clench my fists and storm over. "WHAT THE FUCK?!" I scream at him.
Michael races over and pushes me away from him, so I don't punch him straight in the face. "She just came out in front of me! I-I couldn't stop!" He stutters, his face going pale. I ignore him, running over to the lifeless girl on the floor. The one I love with all my heart. The driver is calling the ambulance. Only useful thing he can do. Elena's head is bleeding and she looks dead. "Please don't be dead, please!" I think to myself. She can't die... I've only just got her back. The sound of the ambulance snaps me out of my thoughts and I hold her in my arms. "Please be okay..." I whisper, a tear sliding down my cheek. The vehicle pulls up and medics rush over to us.
"What happened?" One of them asks.
"Sh-she got hit by my car. She ran into the road, I didn't have any time to stop!" The driver explains nervously. More medics rush over, and Elena is put onto a stretcher. They carry her into the ambulance. "You can ride with her in the ambulance if you like, lads." The medic says.
"Thank you!" Ashton smiles weakly. We all climb into the back of the ambulance and we set off to the hospital. I just hope she's going to be alright...
*
We're currently in the waiting area. I keep pacing back and forth, I'm going out of my mind, not knowing what's happening. I go over to the desk. "Can we go and see Elena? She was brought in about twenty minutes ago." I explain.
"I'm sorry sir, but she's in theater at this moment. Take a seat and a doctor will come and get you when you're allowed to go and see her." She apologises. I groan and walk back over to the others. "I'm sorry, Calum." Ashton whispers.
"Why are you sorry? You didn't do this." I frown.
"I promised I'd look after her. I failed." He blinks, and I can see him trying to get rid of his tears.
"You did look after her, mate." I reassure. He covers his face with his hands, and I see his body shaking. He's crying... I give him a hug. It's not as awkward as I thought it would be. He suddenly grabs me tightly too, crying into my shirt. I hold back the tears brimming in my eyes.
*
Another fifteen minutes pass and we still haven't heard anything. I've asked the woman at the front desk a few more times, but every time I asked about seeing Elena, she was still in theater. I seriously hope she makes it. I couldn't bare it if she dies... "Are you here for Elena?" I snap out of my thoughts and look up to see a Doctor standing in front of us. "Yes, we are." I nod, standing up.
"She's out of theater, so you can now see her. Although I will need to speak to someone in her family." He explains.
"We are her family." Michael says.
"I'm sorry, but I can't believe that. The lady at the desk has already told me you're her friends." He shakes his head. "What bull!" Luke protests. I think for a minute or two. Then I get an idea.
"Ashton's her brother." I say to him. He looks at Ashton, who looks at me and then gets up.
"I'm her brother." He nods. It's not a lie, it's the truth.
"Well then I'll need to speak to you about Elena." The doctor tells Ashton.
"You can all go and see her, follow me." He adds. We all follow him down the corridors until we stop outside of a room. I look in through the window and I see Elena lying there, wires coming off her in various parts of her body. She looks like a lab experiment lying there... Her eyes are still closed. If I'm being honest, she still looks beautiful. "You can go in now if you like." The doctor smiles. "Ashton, could I quickly speak to you about Elena?" He turns to Ash, who simply nods. I walk into the room with Luke and Michael, closing the door. "She's so lifeless..." Michael whispers sadly. "Not lifeless, just sleeping..." Luke replies.
"She's so beautiful... I've missed her so much." I sigh, taking her hand in mine. The heart monitor shows her heart race increase slightly for a few short seconds before going back to normal.
"She knows you're here..." Luke whispers in disbelief.
"You think so?" I ask happily, staring at her gorgeous face.
"Yeah..." Luke nods, smiling a little. I hope he's right. I hope Elena knows I'm here, that I'm waiting for her to show me her beautiful brown eyes. "I'm gonna get a coffee. Be right back." Michael says, going over to the door. He opens in and I hear crying. It sounds like Ashton. I frown, getting up and walking out into the hall with the rest of the guys. "What's wrong, Ash?" Luke asks, furrowing his eyebrows. "E-Elena!" He sobs. Her name makes me tense. What about Elena? "What's wrong with her?" Michael questions, the sound of worry in his voice.
"Sh-she's-"
"She's what, Ash?" I cut in, getting a little impatient.
"Sh-she's in a c-c-coma!" He cries. Luke hugs him, while he cries into his shoulder.
I feel my world crumbling down around me. Elena's in a coma? I feel my eyes well up with tears and they start siding down my cheeks. Michael's arms suddenly go around me, and I hug him back, sobbing. My reason for living is in a coma, she's not just sleeping. Ten minutes of crying passes, and we're all in Elena's room, sitting around her bed. Ashton takes her hand, and her heart monitor shows her heart race do what it did when I held her hand earlier. "She knows I'm here..." Ashton whispers in shock.
"Can we try?" Michael asks, gesturing to him and Luke. Ashton and I nod, moving so they can take her hand too. Luke goes first, and her heart race speeds up. Michael tries; it happens again. "How can that be?" Ashton frowns.
"Well, Mr Irwin, she's in a coma. It means she's sleeping, but she can still sense people. There's a high possibility that she can hear you too." The doctor says as he comes into the room with a clipboard. "Ashton explained that you're all her family in some way. So, I want to let you that there's a little bit of bad news..." He continues. Bad news?
"I'm afraid we don't know when she'll wake up from the coma." He explains. I can tell there's more coming, so I sit nervously in my chair. "We're not sure if she'll ever wake up." He says. My heart shatters into a million pieces. "What?! B-but you can do something to help her wake up, right?!" Luke panics.
"I'm afraid not. It's a case of monitoring her and seeing if she wakes up." He sighs, answering Luke's question with the worst possible outcome. The doctor leaves us, closing the door behind him. "I can't believe this..." I whisper, running my fingers through my messy hair.
"She's gonna wake up. This is Elena we're talking about. She's been to hell and back, and she came back from it strong. She's a fighter." Michael says in determination.
"I really hope you're right..." I mumble, taking her small hand in mine.
"Elena? I hope you can hear me... You need to wake up, okay? Don't leave me, don't leave us. I didn't think I'd ever see you again, but I have, and I want to keep it that way. Just wake up, please..." I say to her, my voice cracking.
- Elena's POV -
"Elena?" It's Calum... "I hope you can hear me... You need to wake up, okay? Don't leave me, don't leave us. I didn't think I'd ever see you again, but I have, and I want to keep it that way. Just wake up, please..." I hear his voice crack, and I can sense that he's crying. I want to wake up. I want to be able to open my eyes again, and see his beautiful brown ones looking into my plain hazel ones. But, I can't... "Elena..." I see a bright light, and two figures come forwards.
"M-mum?" I whisper, tears welling up in my eyes. "Dad?" I smile. They open their arms and I run into them, hugging them both tightly. "A-am I dead?" I frown nervously, looking around.
"No, sweetheart." My mum shakes her head.
"B-but you are..." I reply with confusion.
"We came to see you at the gates, Els Bells." My dad explains. 'Els Bells'... I remember him always calling me that... "I don't understand..." I frown. This is all difficult to understand.
"You're not dead, unless you choose to walk through the gates." My mum smiles, gesturing to the white light. "But you guys can stay with me, right?" I smile happily. "You're out the gates, so"
"No, sweetheart. We have to go back soon... But if you want to be with us, you can come too." My dad explains, taking my hand in his. I could be with my parents again. I could stay with them forever. But Calum, the boys... Could I leave them behind? "We know you love them very much. Especially Calum... You don't have to come, baby. We won't be hurt if you choose to be with your other family." My mum smiles reassuringly. I think for a few minutes.
"I'm sorry..." I whisper, tears brimming again.
"It's okay!" My parents hug me tightly, and I grip onto their shirts for dear life. It's such a familiar feeling, a comforting one. I know that once I let go, I may never see them again... I want to make this hug last. "We have to go now, sweetheart. But you need to fight. Fight hard to wake up, okay? If you believe, you can wake up. Just keep fighting." My dad says, kissing my forehead. They walk towards the light, and they start to fade. "I love you!" I call to them, crying.
"We love you too, sweetheart!" My mum calls back.
"Always!" My dad adds. And then they're gone. I fall to my knees, sobbing. They're gone. Just like that, they're gone...
"I can't lose her..." Calum's voice rings in my ears, and I listen.
"You won't lose her." Ashton...
"Remember what I said before; she's a fighter." I hear another voice. Mikey...
"Elena's tough." The fourth voice, I wouldn't miss anywhere. I know that's Luke's voice...
"Wake up, beautiful, please wake up..." Calum whispers. I'm trying, Cal, I'll always keep trying...
- Calum's POV -
I get up and leave the room with Luke to get something to eat for all of us. "What do you want?" I ask as we reach the counter in the café that the hospital have. "I say we get a standard bacon sandwich for all of us." Luke suggests. I order the sandwiches and get four bottles of Coke too, waiting for the woman to put them all in a bag. When she does, I pay and thank her. We both head back to the room, giving the other two their sandwich and coke. "Thanks," Michael grins, taking a bite. We all eat our food and drink our coke. We've been here for a few hours already, and it's past 12:00. Elena still hasn't shown any sign of waking up. "We need to go home, Calum... You can't be here for Elena if you're exhausted. We'll visit her again in the morning." Ashton says. "Fine..." I sigh. "Bye beautiful..." I whisper to her, kissing her forehead. I hope she's still okay tomorrow morning. I don't think I'd forgive Ashton if something happens overnight...
