Summer had passed and it was now the beginning of school. Lexa had returned to the Gilbert house two days previously to prepare for the new school year. Jenna and Jeremy had greeted her enthusiastically, but Elena had just nodded and left her alone. Lexa just rolled her eyes at her attitude.

By the time the rest of the Gilbert house had risen for school, Lexa had already been on a five-mile run, showered, and changed. She went down into the kitchen for a coffee before school.

"Toast, I can make toast" Jenna told the siblings as they piled into the kitchen ready to leave.

"It's all about the coffee, Aunt Jenna" Elena told her whilst filling a cup full of the dark liquid.

"Is there coffee?" Jeremy questioned hopefully. Lexa smiled and passed him her cup before filling a travel cup full. Jeremy thanked her.

Jenna looks about, slightly overwhelmed. "Your first day of school, and I'm totally unprepared. Lunch money?"

The twenty-dollar bill she was holding up was snatched up by Jeremy. Lexa snatched it off him with a raised eyebrow and a giggle. He scoffs playfully at her, bumping her shoulder.

"We're good, Aunt Jenna. Breathe" Lexa told her calmly.

"Anything else? A number two pencil? What am I missing?"

"Don't you have your big presentation today?" Lexa and Elena said in sync. They side-eyed each other. It wasn't often they spoke together anymore. Elena seemed to resent her more after they did. So, they tried to avoid it altogether. Sometimes, like that morning, they didn't plan on it, but it still happened.

"I'm meeting my thesis advisor at... Now. Crap!" Jenna panicked and ran to collect her stuff.

"Then go. We'll be fine" Elena told her with a small smile. She turned to Jeremy. "You okay?"

"Don't start" he scoffed out before leaving. Lexa just raised her eyebrows, taking a sip of her coffee.

"Why do you encourage it?" Elena asked her snobbishly.

"I don't Lena. I just accept he's grieving differently to us. It won't be forever. You can't parent him. It'll drive him to rebel more" she told her. Lexa picked up her bags and walked out the house. Bonnie had just arrived to take the twins to school.

----------

The car ride was fairly awkward for Lexa. Bonnie was more Elena's friend than hers. She sat in the back reading one of the Gilbert Journals to pass the time.

"So, Grams is telling me I'm psychic. Our ancestors were from Salem, witches and all that. I know. Crazy! But she's going on and on about it, and I'm like, put this woman in a home already! But then I start thinking, I predicted Obama and I predicted Heath Ledger, and I still think Florida will break off and turn into little resort Islands... Elena! Back in the car" Bonnie spouted off quite fast. Lexa was vaguely interested. John had told her all about the Bennett witch line. Johnathan Gilbert made a few mentions of an Emily Bennett in his journals too.

"I did it again, didn't I? I-I'm sorry Bonnie. You were telling me that...?" Elena asked her with a sheepish look on her face.

"That I'm psychic now"

"Right. Okay, then predict something. About me"

Lexa rolled her eyes at Elena's demanding tone. However, she was interested to see what Bonnie came up with. Bonnie scrunched her face in thought.

"I see..." She began mysteriously. Suddenly, a bird came out of nowhere and hit the windshield. Bonnie swerved slightly trying to stop the car. Lexa looked towards Elena who's breathing had sped up slightly, and her knuckles had turned white from how hard she gripped the dashboard.
