Unexpected

The 3:05 bell rang indicating that junior year is finally over. Everyone screamed and shoved to leave the horrible place known as school.

The intercom turns on and a country accent fills our ears

"Now remember kids, if you have nothing fun to do, or if your parents don't want you to be home this summer, our school is having a summer camp this year! Oh it's going to be so much fun! I hope to see you there"

I scoff at the announcement. Absolutely no one is going to go. That is a fact.

I get in my car and wait for Karol to get in. We live next door so we pretty much do everything together. Karol is short, has long brown hair and brown eyes to match. Like me, she hasn't done much either. When I think about it, all of my friends are like this. Average.

I pull into my driveway and karol and I head our different ways.

"Bye!" I yell from my door

"Bye" she smiles and walks into her house

"Hey sweety" smiles my mom "we need to have a chat"

Her dark, shoulder length hair was neatly curled as usual.

"Ok..?" I say

"So I probably should have told you this earlier, but dad, Mikey and I are going to Italy this summer"

"...How long?" I ask

"Two months"

"...What?"

"You see we would take you luny toons (my nickname ever since birth) but there were only three tickets left and you have a lot of work to do so I figured you could stay here in California while all of us are in Venice"

I try to say something like "its summer. I have no work to do" but she interrupts

"Oh but don't you worry, I wasn't going to let us have all of the fun because that would be unfair wouldn't it?"

"I guess"

"So" she says with a smile "you're going to.... SUMMER CAMP! Oh your going to have so much fun and don't you worry a thing because it's all been paid for"

My jaw drops. She can't be serious.

"Mom are you kidding?! I rather live in a dumpster with crackhead Elmo than go to my schools lame summer camp. I'm going to be the only one there just watch. Actually no. it's going to be me and that one girl with a belly button fetish."

Her cold eyes start to lose patience

"Grow up Luna it can't be that bad. Plus your opinion doesn't really matter because you're going wether you like it or not. Susan promised to look out for you and tell me how you do so you better be on your best behavior."

She knows I hate summer camps. She's doing it to irk me.

"Mom camp starts tomorrow" you can hear the annoyance in my voice

"Then you better get packing" she smiles

I always got along better with my dad. I would have probably gone insane without him. My mom and I have just never really bonded in any way. But honestly I'm completely fine with that.

Dad could have done so much better than her. Not that my mom isn't pretty, in fact she is beautiful. But I don't really think either of them are happy with each other.

I leave and head upstairs to my room. I have a window in it that I could easily sneak out of but I've never done it and quite frankly I probably never will. I'm not one to break rules no matter how unsupportable my mom gets.

I text karol

To: can you pleaseeee go to summer camp with me?

From: you're going to summer camp?!

To: apparently

From: Sure I have nothing better to do. Don't worry it might be fun with the two of us there.

To: thank you so much!

And from there we just started to talk about hot guys when I hear a knock on the door.

"It's open" I say

In peeks a tall guy with dirty blonde hair along with a scruffy beard known as my father. A smile forms from the corners of my mouth.

"It's going to be fine. You could use some more friends" he smirks

My dad could be a movie star just based on his looks. He has the most amazing smile and natural modesty. My mom just can't see it. She treats him like crap.

"At least I get to take a break from mom"

"Hey" he says a bit more sternly "be nice to your mother she birthed you. You'll miss her when were gone"

"I wouldn't be so sure"

He ignores my comment

"Look at the bright side. You could get a boyfriend!"

"I don't want a boyfriend" I lie

"Suree" he laughs and leaves my room
