Patrick Adair's POV
"Maybe you should watch the confidence in your step."My son's lack of enthusiasm cannot dampen my mood. Ever since Adryan told me I can have the crown, my spirits have been sky high.
"Careful son, you don't want to sound jealous."
The narrow turns of the Sanctum tunnels are sik not with secrets. This is where the council meets when the House of Kaelan is not part of the conversation.
The Council should be the king's advisor. But when Prince Adryan was accused of treason, we began to meet privately because we all believed that Adryan is a threat.
"I'm th voice of reason behind your blind ambition."
I stopped dead in my tracks. "Are t you happy for me? Did you want it to be you?"
He scoffed dryly. "Aren't you my predecessor? How am I to achieve a title when my lot in life is to inherit it from you?"
I hate this boy sometimes. He sounds too clever for his own good.
"Then be happy for you will be a prince."
"If you make it to the coronation."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Ambitious Adryan gave you the throne just like that?"
"We made a deal. I take the throne and he leads th military. We work together."
"You work for him. The military is where the power lies father. Armies win wars. Armies, aid revolutions. Armies are wn extension of power. You may wear the crown but he is the shot caller. Congratulations on your dream to be a puppet."
The back of my hand found his check swiftly. "I will exike you if you fail to recognize my achievement."
He bowed. "Long live the king." He stated mockingly. "After you."
Ignoring his negativity I walked on. Adryan may have the armies butI have something he doesn't. I have the Council.
It's a group of fifteen powerful men; some nobility, some army and some wealthy business men.
"Gentlemen, we have made it to the helm." I announced with confidence in my voice.
I wasn't met with the expected reaction. They look surprised.
"Is this a joke?" The secretary of the navy asked me.
"Not at all. King Relian has abdicated the throne." Daa Haan's wealthiest business man informed us.
"And how would you know that?" The Duke of Daa Haan questioned.
"I have my sources."
"Well Zahai, it would be hard for us to trust unknown sources."
"Is it true Patrick?" Zahai asked me. "Did King Relian abdicate the throne?"
"Yes. Firsthand information from Prince Adryan himself. Now if you do not mind, I was making an unforgettable introduction. We are at the helm because I am King Relian's successor. Prince Adryan is handing over the throne."
"Just like that?" A baron asked me. "I mean we all know Adryan! Why would he give up power just like that?"
"That's the thing." My stupid son spoke up. "Adryan is keeping the military. He has named himself Supreme Commander. Father gets a shiny crown."
I restrained myself from knocking out his teeth.
"What is a kingdom without an army?" The Secretary of the Navy asked me.
