Samira's POV
My dear friend Keli is back. I have been looking forward to this day since he left. Keli imhas become a close friend over time and we share no dull moments between us. We are never short of something to laugh or talk about.I looked at myself in the mirror one more time before noticing the man standing at the doorway. The butler doesn't smile.
"Samira."
"Yes?" I turned around.
"His Majesty The King is asking for your presence in the throne room."
"The king you say? King Adryan?"
"The King of upside-down town. Who do you think?" He is also very sarcastic with anyone he seems to be below him.
"Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed again? Cheer up!" I walked past him with nothing but nervousness in each step.
Why would the king ask for me? Have I done something wrong?
As I approached the throne room doors, two guards stopped me. I have only been to the throne room once. It was when Selina was coronated. It was a direct invitation from the Queen herself. I am not a noble. I'm far from it and thus I'm like any other commoner in this kingdom. I am privileged to even walk the floors of this palace and to even breathe it's air.
"I'm here to see the king."
"When he asks for you, the doors will be opened."
I stood patiently, watching the doors. I'm curious as to why he has summoned me here. I haven't done anything that he should reprimand me for. Is it Selina? Has she done something stupid and made me her accomplice?
I brought my nails to my teeth; a horrid habit that occurs when I'm stressed.
Selina often forgets how well she has it. She was borne into nobility. She has known nothing but a comfortable life, never wanting anything, not even the prince who fell into her lap. She has everything q woman in Chea Niva could want yet she finds ways to frustrate her own happiness. She better not drag me into her mess! Unlike her, I'm disposable.
When the heavy doors opened, I immediately composed myself, trying to exude calmness when my heart is threatening to burst out of my chest.
Selina and the Queen Mother are here. Keli is here. That annoying man from Saine Neane is also here. I kept my eyes focused on Selina, pleading for a hint of why I'm here but nothing.
"Your Majesty." I curtsied.
"Samira, this is Mr Zahai it from now on, His Grace, the Duke of Daa Haan." What? Duke? "Usually, the Queen makes these matches but I chose to make this one because I believe you deserve to be rewarded for loyally being at Selina's side." What's the reward? Where is this going? "You have also been loyal to me. This man, will be your husband."
I lost all feeling in my legs. My knees buckled under my weight and I tumbled down, losing all consciousness for a moment.
When I woke up this morning, I never imagined that my day would turn out this way. I don't mind surprises. I love them. The only thing about surprises is that they are not under the control of the one being surprised.
My eyes flattered open to the sight of a pair of warm brown eyes gazing down at me. His perfect white teeth are a sharp reminder that there is not only intention behind the smile but that he and I don't come from the same world. After all, he is like the sky and I'm the dusty ground below. We cannot be together!
Snapping out of my daze, I sat up at once.
"Are you all right?" The king asked me. The rest have gathered around me too.
