I sit on the train, put my head back on the seat, and begin to brainstorm my plan. I figure that I will check into a hotel and drop off my belongings there. However, the next part has me confused. I'm unsure whether I should tell Gale before I show up, or arrive unannounced.
My thoughts are interrupted as nausea overtakes me again. Luckily, I make it to the bathroom. Then I walk back to my seat and take a nap for the rest of the way.
I awake when the train comes to a halt. I exit the train and walk out onto the Capitol's streets. The streets that once held the streaming blood of innocent. I repeat what I said at the graveyard,
For you Prim.
I find a hotel nearby and walk in.
"Hi, I'd like a room please," I state.
The lady at the front desk asks, "Water view or town view."
"Whichever," I say knowing it doesn't matter because I won't be here long. I hand her some money.
"Alrightie," she says while handing me a key, "Go up the stairs and it will be 3 rooms to the left."
I take the key and say, "Thank you." I follow her directions and find my room.
Inside the room, I find a closet, a nightstand, a bed, and a big window. I open my game bag and empty out it's contents. I place my clothes in the closet and the train ticket on the nightstand. I notice that on the nightstand there is a phone and phonebook. And on that phonebook I see an add for tours of the president's mansion.
With the help of the add, I sketch out my plan completely. I will take a tour and stray from the group. If anyone stops me I will use their ignorance to my advantage and tell them I'm visiting my "cousin". Then I will find Gale and him and I will have a talk. In that talk, I hope I can stir up enough old memories that he can go back to his old opinion on hunger games.
Out of the blue, I become very hot. That's odd because it is February. I figure I just need some fresh air and that I am working myself up too much. The tour start at 4:00 and it is about 2:40 now, so I decide I'll look around outside.
I walk down the stairs and smile and wave at the lady at the front desk. I push open the door and breathe in the cool air. But, it doesn't help. I just get hotter and hotter. Beads of sweat form on my forehead like morning dew on spiderwebs. My vision becomes blurry. My head spins. Suddenly, the world goes dark.
~~~~~~~
I wake to a bright white light.
Everything comes into focus and it doesn't take me long to realize I'm in the hospital. Then I notice Peeta sitting in a chair next to my bed.
"Hey babe," I say, my voice groggy from sleep.
He jumps out of the chair and says excitedly, "Oh my God, you're awake. I was so worried."
"Yeah how long have I been out?"
He answers, "Few hours. But, I was so worried."
I try to get out of my bed to give him a hug then a sharp pain pierces through my lower abdomen. I groan and Peeta goes to my bed and hugs me. He says, "I was so worried. Like really worried. Oh my gosh, I love you. Why you are in the Capitol I don't know. But, you're alive and that's what matters. Man, I love!"
I laugh, "I love you too." Then I realize that this is the longest and farthest I've been from my children. I ask, "How are the kids?"
"Great. They just miss their momma." Peeta replies. I smile then a doctor walks in.
"Ah, I see you've woken up," he says nicely but his face is full of worry and urgency. A nurse comes in and he tells her a bunch of medical terms I don't understand. He leaves and the nurse comes over to me with a shot.
She says, "I'm going to take some blood for Dr. Evans. Could you please stick your arm out?" I do so and look away from the needle. She finishes and says, "All done. The doctor will be back in a moment."
The doctor comes back minutes later. Instead of urgent looking, his face is solemn. "Mr. and Mrs. Mellark," he says and sits on a stool he pulled close to us, "I have good and bad news. The good news is that Mrs. Mellark will be fine."
Peeta smiles and I smile too. He kisses me. I ask, "Wait, what is the bad news then?"
He says, "It pains me to say this it truly does. I'm sorry, but the baby. She didn't make it."
