Chapter 12

My vision blurred as the ringing in my ears continued "That's right bitch stay down" I heard Ashton's voice as I collapsed to my knees in the grass. Kyle quickly swooped in and grabbed Ashton pulling him backward by his shoulders. Maddie ran full speed towards me and slid against the grass as I tried to stop the ringing in my ears. "That was a good one" I laughed as Maddie cupped my cheeks pulling my head up to meet her worried eyes. "No, that was a cheap shot in a time of weakness" Maddie cut in as she examined my face. I just grabbed her wrists and removed her hands from my face.

"I'm okay really" I said as she finally got up off of the grass. Maddie ran over to Ashton and Kyle slapping him across the face. "What the hell is wrong with you, I never want to see you again" she yelled at him as I slowly made my way over to them. "Maddie, please" Ashton called out to her his voice full of pain making my heart clench. "No, don't you dare. That was a cheap shot and you know it" Maddie fumed with untold rage at him. "Maddie, it's okay really. I deserved it, we're even now. Right Ashton?" I questioned giving him a 'please play along look'. He nodded quickly as his eyes reconnected with hers, "Yes, we're even now" he said with a curt nod towards me before turning back to face her.

In that moment I knew it was no use, she was in love with him and he was in love with her. I am man enough to know when I am being a third wheel and I will no longer do this to them. "Maddison, please baby, I know I've done some really awful things to you. And I know you will probably never forgive me, but I will stop at nothing to prove to you just how much you mean to me. All I'm asking for is a second chance to make things right, I'm in love with you Maddison Christine Whitley" he declared.

My heart crumpled as soon as her face softened and it was then I knew there was never going to be a chance. He loves her just as much as she loves him, no matter what he will ever do she will always choose him. I sucked up my pride and took a step forward "Maddie, I know your head is swimming right now, but you owe it to yourself to try and make it work" I said softly. "Ashton may not be the best guy in the world, but at least he's showing you he can and will change. Please Maddie, you don't want to regret this decision" I finished as Ashton mouthed a silent 'Thank You' from his position on the ground. "Adonis, what are you saying" Maddie turned to face me as Ashton stood up off of his knees. "What I'm saying is, you two love each other and you both owe it to the other to try and make it work. The opposite of love is indifference not hate, until you feel indifferent to each other you have to try and make it work" I finished as I grabbed her hands in mine. "Maddie, you would be a fool to let what the two of you have go. Especially when you two have so much history" I finished my spiel to her before stepping away from her.

"Ashton, I'm so sorry for kissing your girlfriend and beating you unconscious in the park. You didn't deserve any of that and I hope you don't waste your second chance. Maddie is an amazing girl, anyone can see that" I said reverting my eyes back to her before bringing my eye contact back to Ashton. "Please make sure to treat her right, she deserves nothing, but the best. I promise I will keep my distance and not make waves in your relationship again" I finished and Ashton gave me a knowing look. I just shook my head and went to leave, but Ashton's hand on my shoulder stopped me. "I accept your apology and you were right we are even now. Thank you for taking it like a man" he said with a firm nod before shaking my hand.

With that hand shake we both silently agreed that we both love her, but only one of us can have her. Right now, the one she loves is not me and that's okay. I will wait as long as I have to until she's fully ready to love me the way that I love her. "I hope we can be civil about this, seeing as Maddie and you have mutual friends" Ashton added and I smiled before nodding my head. "Sure man" I responded before a loud male voice snapped us out of our little moment. "Well, that's just so cute" Kyle said as he slowly clapped his hands. "I'm gonna go back inside before I vomit all over the front yard" he laughed as he strolled towards the front door.
