Chapter 12 - Act normal
*****
"Just act normal." Ace mumbled as he pulled up his car outside the diner. He switched the engine off as he looked over at Cora.
Cora nodded as she looked back at him. "We can do this."
"Just a nice little dinner, as a newly married couple." Ace mumbled. "Lets go Lady."
The pair got out of Ace's car as they walked around to go in the diner.
"Can't believe I let Connie buy you your clothes." Ace grumbled as he looked Cora up and down in that same beige, conservative dress.
Cora shrugged as the two of them headed towards the diner entrance. Ace tried so hard to get into the act of happily married and loving husband.
"Why are you walking funny?" Cora asked him quietly as she looked him up and down slightly. "You're like a puppy that doesn't know what treat to go get."
"How do married people act?" Ace whispered back, leaning closer to her as he reached out for the door to the diner, opening it up for the pair of them.
"Same way people act in relationships I guess." Cora mumbled with a shrug, heading inside the diner first.
Ace nodded slowly as he followed behind her, before gently placing a hand on her lower back and guiding her over to a booth near the corner.
"And how do people act in relationships?" Ace asked a follow up question as Cora simply sighed, as the pair took their seats opposite each other.
"Just how you normally would, maybe with someone like Betsy." Cora couldn't help but talk in an almost sarcastic tone, as her eyes flickered up to Ace.
Ace was silent as he somewhat scowled at her. "Very funny."
"I thought so." She retorted with a smirk of her own as the pair picked up the menu.
"What can I- Oh Ace."
They both looked up as the waitress approached, clearly a girl that recognised Ace as Cora didn't really want to ask how they had previously been acquainted.
"You want your usual?" She asked, completely blanking Cora as her whole body was standing near and facing towards Ace.
"Yeah and bring my-" Ace paused as he somewhat gulped, looking between the waitress and Cora. "Bring my um-"
The waitress and Cora almost raised their eyebrows in sync. Cora seemed to scoff as she shuffled in her seat, looking up at the waitress.
"I'm his-" Yet her confidence faltered the moment she went to say 'wife.'
The waitress gave her a brief glance as she looked between Ace and Cora.
"Are you two okay?" She asked as the pair of them were blankly staring at her.
"We'll get two of my usual." Ace blurted out quickly. "Now fuck off a minute."
The waitress rolled her eyes but sighed as she nodded, scribbling something down on her pad as she turned to walk away from them.
"Well... That went well..." Ace muttered quietly as he nervously scratched the back of his head, leaning back in his seat.
"You couldn't even tell her I was your wife?" Cora asked, looking straight at Ace. "Don't tell me she's another girl you've had sex with."
"No!" Ace quickly exclaimed as a few other diners briefly glanced over at them. "I did not fuck her." He grumbled as he leant forward on the table between them.
Cora quickly looked as she saw a few other people turning away, before her attention went back on Ace.
"I didn't fuck her." Ace whispered as they were almost leaning on the table between the two of them. "I promise you I didn't."
"Ace, you don't have to keep saying so." Cora sighed as she rested her elbows on the table, her chin resting on her hands. "Please can we just change the subject?"
"Yeah yeah, totally." Ace nodded as he coughed slightly, sitting upright. "What um-"
"What did your uncle want today?" Cora tried asking, wanting to stick to the idea of changing the subject.
Ace coughed again as he shuffled on his seat, looking down at his hands on the table. "Oh it's nothing important, just family business." Technically he knew he wasn't lying, it was family business, just her family and not his. Even though it was his family, involved with her family but not in the way of them being fake married and involved that way and-
Ace groaned aloud as he let his head fall forward. Cora quickly put her hands out on the table so Ace's head rested on her hands.
"It was that good huh?" She asked with a small laugh as she looked down at him. "Are you going to tell me what happened?"
"You don't want to know." Cora felt Ace's mouth move against her hand.
"I thought married couples didn't-"
"Um- your food?" The waitress has suddenly reappeared as she was carrying a tray.
Ace instantly sat up as the tray was placed between them, he looked up at the waitress and nodded. Cora looked down as she saw the two plates full of chips with a cheeseburger each and two bottles of beer. Looking up though, she saw Ace was somewhat distracted as the waitress walked back over to the counter, his eyes clearly not on the back of her head.
Cora flung her foot under the table at him as he winced, looking back at her. "Could you be any more subtle?"
"What? I wasn't doing anything." Ace tried to explain.
"Sure, tell that to the magnets in your eyes being pulled straight to the waitress's arse." Cora scoffed as she began picking at her chips.
"I wasn't staring at her arse." Ace scoffed in retaliation, picking up his burger.
Cora nodded as she continued to eat. "You were, I bet you even noticed the red stripes on her short pockets."
"They were blue." Ace corrected as Cora looked up at him with a raised eyebrow.
"Ahh yeah see, now I see my mistake there." Ace added with a mouthful of burger.
"This marriage was a mistake." Cora grumbled as she picked up her own burger to take a bite.
"I know, I know you love me." Ace continued to try talk with his mouth full of food.
Cora grimaced slightly as she shook her head, continuing to eat as she briefly glanced around the diner. Various people were either eating or daring glances over at her and Ace as the pair ate. Then again, that could have just been because no-one had seen Ace eating dinner with a girl that had a ring on her finger.
