Chapter 15 - Page 5

Cora was downstairs trying to tidy up the kitchen when Ace came down, fully dressed and looking smarter than usual, his uncle was truly beginning to want him to smarten up. Ace's eyes watched Cora silently as he leant against the doorframe of the kitchen.

She was wearing a simple maroon coloured dress with her hair all tied up with a ribbon as she was washing up the stuff from the night before. His eyes trailed over every inch of her as he stood silently watching.

"I can feel your eyes on me you know." Cora finally spoke with a small laugh as she briefly looked back at him over her shoulder.

"Oh am I not allowed to stare now?" He replied with a laugh. "Damn woman, setting so many rules I can't keep track."

Cora let out a small laugh as she finished washing up, grabbing a tea towel to dry her hands before she began drying up the dishes.

"Welcome to married life Mr Merrill."

"Married life can suck my dick." Ace scoffed back but a slight hint of a smirk traced his lips.

"Hey, now you're finally getting action on that thing." Cora laughed.

Ace didn't want to but he laughed along with her. How was she funny with just one line? His mind thought over everything as he opened his mouth to speak.

"Hey Cora I need to tell-"

But his sentence was cut off by a loud, rather rapid knocking at the door. Ace let out a slight grumble as he turned and headed to the door. Expecting his uncle, he grew more tense with every step, but was somewhat surprised when he opened the door to reveal Eyeball, Billy and Charlie.

"You'll never guess what's in the paper this morning." Eyeball spoke instantly as the trio walked in the house, without even waiting for Ace to let them in properly.

"Your obituaries?" Ace muttered under his breath, annoyed it was the guys that had interrupted his conversation with Cora.

"What's an obituary?" Charlie asked blankly as the three of them went straight into the kitchen.

"Coffee sweetheart." Billy spoke as he leant against the wall, Eyeball sitting up on the kitchen counter, Charlie taking a seat at the kitchen table.

Cora's face instantly changed, her eyebrow raised as both her hands went to her hips, causing Billy to laugh.

"Any reason you are all here? Besides to clearly piss me and the wife off?" Ace grumbled as he returned to leaning against the doorframe.

Charlie handed him the newspaper in his hands. "Page 5."

Ace half snatched the paper from him as he put it on the counter, flicking through quickly. His jaw dropped slightly as a picture of Cora stared back up at him. 'RUNAWAY BRIDE' was the headline directly above her image.

"What is-" Cora had begun to ask as she went over to him but stopped as her eyes fell on the news article. "Shit."

Ace nodded slightly. "Shit indeed baby..." He muttered.
