Chapter 16 - A honeymoon
*****"Hey dollface..." Ace cautiously and carefully stepped into Cora's room, slowly pushing the door open.
He'd checked his bedroom and the bathroom before figuring she was just being mad in her room. He had to quickly duck as a pillow came flying at him.
"Fake married or not, don't talk to me like that." Cora snapped as Ace stood up straight again.
"Alright alright, I'm sorry." Ace automatically held his hands up in surrender. "I just-"
"Just what? Don't be one of those guys that's all nice alone but is an arsehole when his mates are around." Cora kept her firm tone as she glared at him, once more her arms crossing over her chest.
"I'm not. I just got a lot to think about..." He started, not really wanting her to fully know what was going on with her uncle. "Fancy a honeymoon?"
Cora's angry expression disappeared as a curious one took its place. "What?"
"We're gonna go stay at Billy's for a few days, his parents are out of town." Ace explained as he took another drag of the cigarette in his hands.
"Why can't we stay here?" She asked curiously.
"Because-" My uncle wants to use you as a pawn to get revenge on your father because he backed out of a deal with him. Ace thought to himself. "Because his brother's retarded and Billy can barely look after himself." Ace blurted out the first lie he could think of.
Cora's scowl returned. "Don't lie to me."
"I ain't lying technically, his little brother is a little shit." Ace spoke with a small shrug. "And Billy can't even work a washing machine."
"Tell me the truth Ace." Cora snapped again.
Ace sighed as he looked down a moment before looking back up at her. "Because I don't want people to come looking for you here."
"Why would they come looking for me here? Just because of some news report." Cora was set on getting answers.
"Because the report suggested you might be in Castle Rock and I know how some people in town view me." Ace was spitballing answers, hoping to find one she'd buy without having to tell her the full truth.
"Can't your uncle protect me?"
Ace was silent. He wasn't sure protecting Cora would be on Pops' mind when he learnt Cora and Ace weren't actually married and Cora was the girl he was looking for.
"Can't we just have a nice week at Billy's?" Ace sighed again.
"You seriously expect me to babysit a child that isn't mine?" She asked, her firm stance remaining as she raised an eyebrow.
"Call it practice." Ace offered up with a small smile, hoping she wouldn't rip his head off.
"I hate you." She muttered as she faced away from him, beginning to look for a bag to put some clothes inside.
A small smirk came to Ace's face. "Now that's the soundtrack of a happy marriage."
Cora tried not to laugh but her lips betrayed her as a small laugh escaped her. Ace's smirk instantly grew, she had laughed, he wasn't in trouble anymore.
