Jack, looking all worn and ragged, made his way into the bustling town. The curious townsfolk couldn't help but steal glances at him, wondering about his story. As he walked through the streets, one of the Mayor's attendants hurried over to him, intrigued by his presence.
Inside the grand hall, a lavish feast was taking place. The heads of the cooperatives for the miners, farmers, and market people were all gathered, being celebrated for their hard work throughout the year. It was a truly remarkable occasion.
The long table stood proudly in the centre of the hall, adorned with an elegant ash-coloured tablecloth. It was a sight to behold, with an abundance of beer, wine, and every imaginable delicacy spread out for all to enjoy. The Mayor's maids stood ready, attending to the guests' every need.
Amidst the lively chatter of the cooperative representatives, the Mayor stood up, dressed in a striking red suit reminiscent of a bygone era. With a tap and a raised hand, he commanded the attention of the room. A hush fell over the crowd, and silence filled the air.
"I am proud to be the Mayor of this great town. We started the year with so much hope that the town would gain a lot and have nothing to lose. It has been because of our joint efforts that the markets, farms, and every activity are going well. I especially want to thank Mr. Harrington for allowing Williams and his team to go on the South America journey, and I hope it's going well for them, though we have not heard any news."
"Applauses!" the Mayor exclaimed. "I also thank Mr. Brown for ensuring the success of all our imports and preventing any losses." He continued, "Also, our head of the Victorian London Bank, Mr. Walker." The Mayor's face lit up with a grin. "I celebrate you. However, my townspeople have voiced complaints about the bank's inability to properly account for their belongings. As I cannot continue to repay them, I kindly request that you step down."
Amidst the lively chatter, the noise in the hall grew louder as the Mayor's attendant approached, his urgent whispers catching the attention of those nearby. The attendant leaned in, sharing what he had witnessed. A confusion creased the Mayor's brow as he exchanged a meaningful glance with Mr. Harrington, a prominent figure at the feast. Sensing the gravity of the situation, the Mayor excused himself from the table, leaving behind a curious audience.
"Why are you alone? where are the rest ?''
Jack spills his deceitful plans to the Mayor, revealing how Williams and the team intend to sell the mined materials to pirates. The Mayor is taken aback by Jack's words, initially doubting their veracity. However, Mr. Harrington, showing no surprise, convinces the Mayor that Williams is the mastermind behind it all, reminding him of his initial reservations about letting Williams and the team embark on their journey. "I mentioned this to you before they left. It seems I was right," Mr. Harrington concludes, his tone both humble and wicked.
In response, the Mayor swiftly orders armed men to search for Williams and his team, regardless of their fate.
"It was so easy as I thought.''
