Serena and I decide to spend the morning around Lumiose City together, just the two of us for once. Clemont and David are buried in the manor workshop with wires, tools, and excited ideas, while Elline and Bonnie are still at the ranch with Mareep and Dedenne. Mom gives us one of those smiles that says she understands more than she needs to say, and that makes Serena blush before we even reach the front gate.
Lumiose feels different when we are not rushing from one problem to the next. The city is still bright and crowded, with people hurrying between cafés, shops, and the wide streets around Prism Tower, but Serena walks beside me at an easy pace. Fennekin keeps close to her boots, proud and perfectly groomed, while Pikachu rides on my shoulder and Froakie watches the city with quiet interest from my other side. Chespin follows with a curious bounce, stopping whenever a shop window catches his attention.
When it is close to lunchtime, Serena slows in front of a restaurant with polished windows and a refined sign. "What do you think if we have lunch in Restaurant Le Nah?"
"That sounds like a good idea," I answer with a smile.
The waiter greets us politely and explains the restaurant's special style. Every course comes with a short battle against a chef, and the flavor is supposed to be best when the battle is finished within the recommended number of turns. Serena looks surprised at first, then amused, and I can tell she likes the idea more than she expected. A meal that includes Pokémon battles feels very Kalos to me, elegant and competitive at the same time.
The first course is a handpicked salad fresh from the garden, and the chef recommends defeating him within two turns. Serena chooses Fennekin, while I call on Froakie. The chef's Pokémon moves carefully, as if the battle itself is part of the presentation, but Fennekin answers with swift footwork and Froakie finishes the rhythm with a clean strike before the second turn ends.
Fennekin's meaning reaches me with polished satisfaction. "If the meal depends on elegance, then I will not let Serena's first course look careless." Froakie gives a quiet cry beside her, and his meaning follows with calm focus. "Fast, clean, and finished before the rhythm breaks."
The salad tastes crisp and bright, with leaves that still carry the coolness of the garden. Serena smiles after the first bite, and Fennekin sits straighter, clearly proud that the course came out perfectly because of our battle.
The soup course follows next. The chef says the condiments are added with great restraint so that we can savor the natural flavor, but again, the best result requires a two-turn victory. Pikachu joins this battle with Fennekin, and they move so smoothly together that the chef laughs as he admits defeat.
Pikachu's meaning reaches me with cheerful pride. "I helped without making a mess this time." Fennekin's meaning answers with careful approval. "That is acceptable, as long as he remembers that clean teamwork still matters."
For the main course, the chef presents fish caught that morning, delicately breaded and pan-fried. The recommended victory is still two turns, and Chespin looks very interested until Serena gives him a warning glance. Chespin settles down with exaggerated innocence, and Froakie helps Fennekin finish the battle before the food loses its perfect heat.
Chespin's meaning reaches me with disappointed honesty. "I was only looking at the food. I was not stealing it yet." Pikachu gives him a sharp look, and his meaning carries a teasing warning. "Yet is the dangerous word."
Serena looks at the table after the final course arrives. "So far we spent six turns battling. This sure is interesting."
"Yeah," I say. "The meal is great. Although this is only in Lumiose City, so I wonder how many other places in Kalos have their own styles like this."
