We were still on Route 18, Vallée Étroite Way, after leaving the Inverse Battle House behind. The battle style there had been strange enough to make even Pikachu pause, because moves that should have been safe suddenly became dangerous and weaknesses turned into strengths. It reminded me of Hoenn's version of the same house, and for a little while the challenge had almost made the road feel normal again.
That feeling faded the moment Terminus Cave came into view.
The Inverse Battle House had left all of us thinking differently about reactions. A move that looked obvious could become the wrong answer if the rule underneath it changed, and I could not stop thinking about how that applied to Team Flare. Lysandre had failed with the Ultimate Weapon, but that did not mean he had stopped. If anything, his next move might be the one we would not expect because we were still looking for the old pattern.
Serena walked beside me with Charla's Poké Ball in her hand, watching the rails that disappeared into the mountain. "You are thinking about Lysandre again."
"Yeah," I admitted. "Geosenge should have ended something, but it feels like it only made him change direction."
Greninja walked close to us, still quiet since Ninja Village. Sometimes he would move like nothing had changed, but sometimes his eyes would meet mine and I would feel the same strange pull from that water-covered form. The feeling had not left us, and I could tell it was still waiting for something neither of us understood.
Pikachu's ears twitched from my shoulder. His steady concern reached me clearly. "We should not let fear make us slow."
"I know," I said. "We keep moving, but we stay ready."
The entrance waited beneath a dark cliff, half-hidden by rails, old signs, and broken wooden beams left from when the mine had still been used. Cold air drifted from inside like the cave was breathing. Squishy's pouch shifted against Bonnie's bag, and I could feel the tiny Core watching the darkness with a tension that did not belong to a simple cave.
Serena looked at the entrance, then checked her guidebook. "I heard this mine was abandoned years ago, but now it is home to many wild Pokémon, so it attracts a lot of Trainers."
"It is also deep enough for Team Flare to hide equipment inside," David said.
Clemont adjusted his backpack straps. "Then we should move carefully. Old mines can have unstable floors, bad visibility, and unexpected drops."
Bonnie held the pouch with both hands. "Squishy, are you sure you want to go in there?"
Squishy bounced out before she finished asking and slipped down a side passage. Its meaning brushed against me like a cold warning. "The place where they took me is deeper."
I looked at Serena, and she already understood. "Everyone, follow Squishy carefully."
The mine swallowed the daylight within a few turns. Serena released Charla, and the flame on Charla's tail filled the tunnel with warm orange light. Noibat fluttered from my shoulder and sent soft sound waves down the paths ahead, while Clemont asked Luxray to help with his X-ray vision. Between them, we avoided cracked rails, deep pits, and false side passages that would have wasted time.
"How much farther?" Bonnie asked after Squishy bounced over another old rail.
Squishy paused on a ledge and looked back at us. "A little deeper. The water remembers."
"I think Squishy says we are close," I said.
Noibat circled above us, then pointed his wings toward a lower passage. His careful flutter reached me clearly. "There is a safer way down."
