Morning on the road after Miroir Way felt quieter than it should have, mostly because our Kalos team had changed so quickly.

Quilladin walked near the front with his new armored body, trying to act as if he had always been that sturdy. Frogadier stayed beside the trees, testing the reach of his evolved legs and the balance of his movements after the secret-scroll mission. Our newly caught Dedenne rode near Pikachu and Helioptile, sending small electric signals with its whiskers whenever it found something interesting along the roadside.

Fennekin watched all of them from Serena's side.

She tried to look calm, but I could see the feeling in her ears. Chespin had become Quilladin. Froakie had become Frogadier. Fletchling had already become Fletchinder before that. Now Fennekin kept glancing at her own reflection in Serena's compact mirror whenever Serena checked her hair, as if wondering when her own moment would arrive.

Serena noticed too. "You want to evolve as well, don't you?"

Fennekin stepped closer and pressed lightly against Serena's leg. Her meaning reached me through the way she looked from Serena to Pancham and then toward the open training space ahead. "I do not want to chase them. I want to grow beside my own dream."

Serena smiled softly and knelt beside her. "Then let's train for our dream. We do not need to force evolution, but we can make our performance stronger."

Pancham put on his sunglasses and struck a pose as if the whole road had become a stage. Eevee watched from behind Pikachu, curious but still careful, while Quilladin tried to look supportive without pushing himself too close to her. Frogadier folded his arms near a tree, clearly pretending not to be interested, even though his eyes never left the practice space.

Clemont had another problem happening behind us. The two Dedenne had been exchanging electric pulses since breakfast, and a third Electric type kept answering from the trees. At first I thought the echoes came from Miroir Way's crystals again, but then something small and flying darted down, grabbed one of Clemont's berry buns, and glided back toward a branch.

Bonnie pointed at it. "An Emolga!"

The Emolga landed with the stolen bun in its paws, cheeks sparkling with mischief. Clemont's Dedenne called up to it, and our new Dedenne answered with a bright pulse. Emolga looked between the two of them, then at Clemont's bag, as if deciding whether friendship or more snacks mattered first.

Clemont sighed, though he was smiling. "So this is the Route 11 Emolga that kept following the Dedenne signals."

Emolga dropped from the branch and glided around Clemont's head before landing on his shoulder. The sudden landing almost knocked him over, but he caught his balance and carefully offered a fresh berry instead of trying to grab it.

"You do not have to steal," Clemont said. "If you want to travel with Dedenne, you can ask properly."

Emolga took the berry, then rubbed its cheek against Clemont's sleeve with a small spark that made his hair puff out. Bonnie laughed so hard she nearly dropped Dedenne.

Clemont adjusted his glasses, hair still standing. "I will interpret that as acceptance."

Emolga's meaning came through the way it stayed perched on Clemont instead of flying away. "The signals are fun, the food is good, and this human panics safely."

"That sounds like a yes to me," I said.

With Emolga settled into Clemont's team, Serena led Fennekin and Pancham into the clearing. She chose a flat patch of grass where the sunlight filtered through the trees in streaks, almost like stage lights. The idea was simple enough to understand, but not simple to do. Fennekin would send a stream of fire upward, Pancham would leap through the edge of the light, and the movement would look like a bright stage entrance instead of a battle attack.
