"They" because souls don't have a set name.
The cycle of being born into whatever hell or heaven they were given this time.
And each 10th birthday, if they made it that far, they were forced to recollect memories of their pass life's. They were to remember their life before reincarnation.
So they knew they were set for the same cycle for the rest of time.
