'Please calm down mx, we need you to help us find out what happened here' A blanket was wrapped around my shoulders as a police officer sat next to me on the cabin steps. 'Tell it to me again, what exactly happened between when you left Mrs Parkin and when you returned.''We've been over this 5 times now, surely that's enough?'
'I'm sorry mx, but we like to be as thorough as possible. We need to know everything we can.' You mean you need to know it wasn't me.
I started to recount the story for what felt like the tenth time, but a sight caught my eye and caused my voice to get lost in my throat. A couple of paramedics were carrying a stretcher with a white sheet placed over who I presumed to be Angela. I could only guess it was a white sheet, the majority of it was stained a deep red. I couldn't tear my eyes away.
'Okay, with all due respect, I think that's enough for today officer. Y/N's had a very tough day and I think it'd be wise to let them rest' Keith came and placed his hand on my shoulder, addressing the officer with a friendly but stern gaze. The officer sighed and stood up, closing his notepad as he spoke to me.
'We'll be in touch. Thank you for your cooperation.' He silently walked back to his car.
I turned to smile at Keith, a silent thank you, and he said 'You can have the rest of the day off, you seem quite shaken up.'
'But what about my group? They're meant to go swimming in the lake this afternoon.'
'We'll find someone to cover for you. Rest up.' He gave my arm a small tap and walked back into the dining hall. I grabbed the blanket and wrapped it further around my shoulders. As I got up, my knees wobbled and I almost got tackled by Sarah running up to me and enveloping me in a hug.
'Omg Y/N! Are you alright? I heard what happened, that's insane! How are you doing?' She was warm and smelled like jasmine. It was so comforting. I could have wept in her arms right there. She loosened the hug and looked at me as I whispered an unintelligible response. 'Has Keith given you the afternoon off? I hope so. Listen, I'd love to stay with you but I need to get back to my team. But, there's a bonfire for only the counsellors and staff at 9 tonight after the kids have gone to bed. I'll come and get you and we can go together, yeah? God, you poor thing.' With that, she ran off, leaving me alone once again.
I started walking back to my cabin, breathing slowly in an attempt to calm myself. The image of Angela's body played over and over again in my mind. Everything was red. What had happened to her?
Thump. Snap.
My head snapped up to the source of the sound. A shadow in the trees. The same shadow. I watched as it started to move. It was getting bigger. No. It was walking towards me.
I stood frozen in horror, unable to move, my feet seemingly rooted to the ground. The shadow came out of the trees, into the light, and I saw a tall, big man wearing a cracked hockey mask. Jason. And he was looking right at me.
Something snapped in my mind and I sprinted away, aiming for the safety of my cabin. My calves were burning but I kept running, terrified of what would happen if he caught me. There was no emotion in his eyes. Except rage.
When I saw the welcoming sight of my cabin, I pumped my legs harder despite the protests from my muscles. If I could just get inside, I'd be safe. I ran with all my energy, almost tripping up the steps and falling through the door. I scrambled to close and lock it, and sat on the floor next to the door, making myself as small as possible. Waiting with bated breath, I listened for any sound indicating where the man would be. I wasn't sure why it hadn't occurred to me that this would happen if I was at Camp Crystal Lake, it's textbook Friday the 13th. Of course the man Katie saw was Jason Voorhees. Though I was glad I hadn't realised it earlier, otherwise I would have never left the cabin in the first place.
I heard nothing. There was no stomping or moving outside. Just the wind through the trees and the birds whistling. Slowly, I rose from the floor and sneaked a peek out the window. Nothing. There was no one there.
I slid back down to the floor and considered what this meant. It could be one of three things: Jason had stopped chasing me when I reached the cabin, Jason had lost where I had gone and then given up, or I had imagined the entire thing. Funnily, I hoped it was the third one.
I sighed in relief, though I still felt weary, and went to lay down on my bed. Hopefully, I could use my time off to have a nap and shut off my brain for a while. I shifted onto my side and pulled the blanket over my head, building a cocoon of warmth around me. For an hour, I tried in vain to fall asleep, but the images of Angela's lifeless body stopped any chance I had of rest. So instead I laid in bed for a couple of hours, staring at the wall, until a hand on my shoulder startled me.
'It's only me, sorry. How are you doing?' Sarah looked down at me, pity in her face. 'The bonfire's starting soon, do you feel up for it?' I sat up, hardly having noticed how dark the sky had become.
'Um, yeah I guess so.' I replied, and she gave me a hand as I got up. Though I didn't really need it, I appreciated how caring she was.
We walked together along the path, lit up by the occasional streetlamp, Sarah filling the silence by telling me about her group. There were a couple of troublemakers who kept pushing people into the lake and aiming the bows at other kids. She couldn't believe what had happened to Angela and swore the police should find out what happened.
When we arrived at the bonfire, Keith was sitting directly opposite the path on a wooden bench, with many other counsellors and staff members huddled around the fire. He waved quickly at us before turning his attention back to the staff member he was sat with. There was a couple at the end of a bench sat way too close to use the cold temperature as an excuse. I followed Sarah to an empty spot on a bench, feeling the warmth of the fire and watching the flames dance in the pale moonlight.
