The dry grass and thistles scratched at my ankles as we walked through the field to the lone house. Sam walked ahead, followed by Sarah and Amy chatting indistinctly, with me and Noah bringing up the rear. We walked in silence as the sun beat down on us, and I felt as if my skin was being stretched over my forehead, like a layer of latex that was much too small for my head. Noah continued to sniff and, though he seemed nice, the sound of it made me want to kill him more and more as each second went by. In an attempt to lessen the noise, or distract myself (maybe a mix of both), I decided to try and strike up a conversation with him.
'Did you see Jaws last summer? I watched it with my aunt and she called her sister to cancel her beach holiday.' I laughed a fake laugh and waited for him to respond. He sneezed and chuckled a little, before sniffing and responding in his nasally voice. I couldn't quite tell because his allergies were so bad but his voice sounded a little higher than Sam's, who had quite a deep voice anyway, but his delivery was always a little monotone even if his expression read otherwise.
'Yeah, I took my dad and he jumped every time the shark came on the screen. It was hilarious.' He laughed again and I joined in, finding a little comfort in his company as I hadn't seen him in the real world yet. Shit, I'm going to bump into him tomorrow aren't I?
We talked the entire way to the house, and I found out he was a movie buff - his favourite was Rear Window, and he'd seen it with his mum but she didn't like it. He also wanted to be a director when he was older. He was really nice and he had a great sense of humour, so I really enjoyed talking to him. My good mood was immediately dampened when I saw we'd caught up to Sam, who was waiting just before the porch with Sarah and Amy.
When we'd stopped in front of him, Sam bounded up the steps and knocked three times on the door, which slowly swung open with a loud creak.
'Hello? Is anyone home? We'd like to use your phone if you have one please.' No response. Sam turned back to the group and sighed. 'I don't think anyone's in.'
'Maybe they're out in the garden?' Amy was scratching her arm, her skin appearing red and irritated.
Sam sighed. 'Yeah, they could be. Why don't we split up and try and find them? Three find the garden and two wait here?'
'What garden, there's just field.' Sarah's voice was dripping with annoyance and she was holding Amy's hand back to stop her from scratching.
'There has to be a shed or something around here. We'll find it.' He placed his hands on his hips as he regarded us all one by one. 'Who's going where?'
The group stayed silent, no one wanting to make a decision.
'Well, I don't want to sit here so I'm going to look for the garden.' Sam stated.
'I want to stay here.' Noah's voice was even more nasal than it had been, which I didn't think possible. 'There's not as much grass here.'
'Okay perfect. You three, where are you going?'
Me, Amy, and Sarah looked at each other, begging someone else to decide before Sam sighed loudly again. 'Y/N, you stay here with Noah. Amy and Sarah, with me.'
The group of three made their way around the back of the house, leaving me and Noah to rest in front of the house. I closed the front door again before perching on the end of the porch steps, where Noah joined me shortly after.
'If I'd have known we'd spend half a day in a field I wouldn't have agreed to come.' He laughed as he held a tissue to his nose, and I chuckled along with him.
'I don't think I've ever met someone with hayfever as bad as you, why did you agree to come?'
'I didn't know there was so much fucking pollen in Texas.' We laughed and I noticed the smile lines around his mouth. His grin was big and cheesy and his eyes sparkled a little when he laughed. His eyes, usually a brown like Sam's, seemed golden in the sunlight. I looked away before it became obvious I was staring.
The crickets hummed as the sun beat down on us. The air was hot and thick and it was making me grow more tired than I'd liked to be at 10 in the morning. Me and Noah continued to talk about movies as we waited for the others to return, and on a few occasions, I almost mentioned films that hadn't come out yet. It took a lot of conscious thinking to remember exactly when the movies had come out.
Only 10 minutes had passed when a blood-curdling scream abruptly stopped mine and Noah's conversation. It had come from behind the house, the direction the rest of the group had ventured to. Without thinking, I jumped up from the step and started running as fast as I could in the direction of the sound. The tall grass slapped at my legs and I could hear Noah following me close behind, heavy thumps from his footsteps breaking the silence of the field. There was nothing but grass everywhere you looked.
My foot collided with something solid and I went tumbling to the ground, Noah shortly falling on top of me in the same position. He quickly scrambled up and I moved to see the lump I'd fallen over was Amy curled up in a ball. Her leg was dark red, blood spilling out from the bear trap around her calf. Her shoulders shook as sobs wracked her body. I heard Noah whisper a soft 'Oh my god.' from behind me and he stepped away slowly.
'Amy, where are Sam and Sarah?' I was crouched down beside her, my hand resting gently on her back.
Between sobs, she managed to choke out 'They l-left. To look for help. Sam first, then S-sarah when he didn't come ba-' She burst into tears again and I rubbed her back as that was the only thing I thought I could do to help at that moment. I had to repress the urge to gag when I caught a glimpse of the bloody contraption again.
'Someone should be here soon to he-'
Another scream sounded, but this time it wasn't Amy, it came from near the house.
'Sarah.'
