Not everything is as it seems

Mary

I stared at Beau and blinked. Did I hear him correctly? He wanted to take me on a date to make Dixie jealous. Was he some kind of special boy?

"Did you fall off a horse and whack your head a billion times?" I asked.

"What's wrong with a date?" Beau held his hands out and shrugged.

"I haven't even decided to give you a chance." I put my hands on my waist and stared Beau down. What was wrong with this fool?

"What's wrong with having a nice dinner while dressed nicely?"

"Everything, you half-breed!" I really wanted to hogtie Beau, tie him to my bumper, and drag his stupid self several miles down the road. I haven't decided how many yet. But it was reaching close to one hundred.

Beau stepped into my bubble—the one I created to protect my heart after Beau demolished it.

"Little lamb, I need to talk to you and don't need you losing your shit. I figured a nice meal in public would work."

"You figured wrong. Assuming makes an ass out of you and me. Well, you since you're a jackass." I crossed my arms and glared at Beau.

"I promise everything will make more sense once we talk."

I pursed my lips, not liking this idea one bit. "Fine. But if you clam up and don't tell me the truth, I will shove a pitchfork so far up your ass you will become a human sprinkler." I turned on my heels and stalked away.

Well, I'm making progress with Mary. I wanted to hurt Shep for listening to him the first time around. His suggestion caused me more grief than I needed. It doesn't help when your girl goes no contact with you.

I didn't tell Hank what happened between Mary and me. Then, I would have to tell him why Dixie was at my house that night.

Shep approached me. "Well?"

"Mary agreed to a date with me."

"That's good, right?"

"It would be better if I had told her the damn truth." I put my hands on my waist and scowled at Shep.

"The same could be said with Waylon. We know Waylon handed Patsy a line of bullshit about Cassie. Cassie only slapped Waylon because he told her the kiss was a mistake."

"Do you have a point?"

"We still need to follow through with our plan."

"That's the problem with this 'plan.' It's causing me more grief than needed."

Shep and I started to argue about this plan.

I started walking toward the barn when I overheard Beau and Shep arguing about some plan. An arm curled around me as someone led me on a dosey doe. I glanced at Waylon and shucked his arm from me. We weren't square dancing now or ever.

I turned to face Waylon with my hands on my waist. "What in tarn nation would make you think it's okay to put your filthy hands on me?"

"I needed to get your attention," Waylon drawled.

"You could've called for me. Don't ever put your hands on me again."

"You enjoyed when I had my hands on you." Waylon smirked.

"Then you shouldn't have kissed another girl, you two-timing rat."

Waylon's smirk faded as his gaze hardened. "Patsy, not everything is as it seems."
