Sentence to Serve

Kai skipped most of his classes that week, and Snape was not happy. That was perhaps one of the reasons that he was stood in the Professors office on Friday morning.

"You better have a good explanation for your absence, Black." The Professor growled as he stalked into his office, his cloak swirling behind him.

Kai let out a dramatic sigh, "I don't know, I guess I kind of lost track of time between helping a mass murderer into the school.. It's very time consuming, you know?"

"Drop the attitude, otherwise you'll be serving more than just the two months of detention I am already giving you."

"Two months?" The boy exclaimed, eyes wide. Lucius was going to send him a howler for sure.

"It was that or McGonagall wanted to have you kicked off the quidditch team for the year.. And I know she only wanted that so Gryffindor had a better chance at winning. So count your blessings I'm not going to take her suggestion this time." The Professor explained, moving to take a seat at his desk, gesturing for the other to sit down opposite him.

Kai was thankful that he hadn't been removed from the quidditch team, it was one of the few things that actually made this place bearable sometimes. Still he wasn't happy that he'd be serving two months of detention, and he knew the boys wouldn't be thrilled about it either. He reluctantly took the seat opposite, his eyes meeting Snapes for the first time since being in the room with him. He didn't look as angry as he thought he'd be.

"I know it is hard at the moment with all the whispers and gossiping, but I will not tolerate you skipping classes, it is down to your professors to control their classrooms. Do you understand?" Snape continued, maintaining eye contact with the boy.

"Yes, Professor." He mumbled, biting his tongue from telling Snape that he himself was unable to control a classroom of gossiping teens, how exactly were others meant to? But he didn't want to add another six months onto his sentence.

"Good, now you'll be doing your detentions between myself, Professor McGonagall and Professor Lupin. If I get any report of you either not showing up on time, skipping out or being disrespectful during you detentions monitored by the other Professors then you will have an extra week added on." The Professor added, sliding a timetable of who all his detentions would be with, what date and times they would be held. It didn't go undetected that Snape made sure he was the one to hold them on days where quidditch practice took place. "As you can see it starts this evening with me, you'll be helping me organise my personal potion ingredients. Somethings may need restocking. Do not be late, Black. Now get to class, I believe it is Dark Arts with Professor Lupin?"

"Yes, sir." he confirmed, folding over the piece of paper and stuffing it in his bag, slinging it over his shoulder as he made his way to class.

"Two months?!" Theo exclaimed, as Kai filled his friends in on his meeting with Snape. "That's insane.. Do you want company? I'm sure between the three of us we could join you."

Enzo and Rowan nodded, "Sure can.. Starting with Enzo, he still has another week for breaking that gryffindors nose." Rowan grinned, quite liking the idea of a challenge to get more detentions.

"No, I'll be fine.. Besides, my detentions are being shared between three Professors. I'm fairly sure it's so they can keep an eye on me, so if and when something does happen with my father I'll be in the clear." he shrugged, walking into Lupins classroom.

"Nice of you to join us today, Mr Black." Lupin greeted, offering the boy a small smile. Kai smiled back, pulling out his book out of his bag and turning to the right page, currently they were studying Unforgivable Curses.

Other than a few comments and questions about what Unforgivable Curses his father may have used the class seemed to go smoothly. He didn't rise to the comments, kept his head down and stopped Enzo from trying to hex one of the particularly brave Gryffindors who kept making smart remarks.

"I don't know how you put up with that bullshit, Kai." Enzo grumbled as they left the classroom with everyone else, "Just hex them and get it over with. Everyone will stop talking then."

"I don't think that will help the situation, Enz.. Plus, I don't need people to fear me more than they already do." he chuckled, walking through the castle, crowds parting for him like the Red Sea, he ignored it though and it appeared that his friends did too.

The day passed relatively quickly, and by the time dinner was finished he was exhausted, but his day was far from over. He got changed before heading to Snapes classroom.

Knocking on the door the boy waited for the Professor to call him inside, tucking his hands into his hoodie pockets, nervously playing with his Slytherin ring. It wasn't the first time he had detention with Snape, and thankfully he was fairly gifted with potions, so Snape always used the boy to help him with things he knew he didn't trust other students with.. He once tried having Enzo help him with cleaning cauldrons, and somehow the boy melted three of them. To this day he wasn't sure if it was a prank or just Enzo being Enzo.

"Mr Black, I'm pleased to see you graced me with your presence this evening." Snape muttered from the door of the Professors personal collection. "If you could please start making a list of the ingredients in those bottles please, they will need replacing soon."

Nodding, Kai got to work, copying down the names from each vial, bottle and jar; as Snape kept adding more. Once they were all out and written down the Professor looked over the list as Kai organised and them away. It wasn't the most thrilling detention but he didn't mind. As he was putting away the ingredients he noticed a stray recipe that must have fallen from one of the Professors books, Wolfsbane, he'd read about that during the week and told Remus about it.. Perhaps Snape was helping him by making it for him. He hoped so.

"Sir, this was on the floor." he hummed, passing it over to the Professor who eyed the boy suspiciously as he noticed what it was for.

"What do you know about Wolfsbane, Black?" Snape asked, as if Kai were in class and was going to studying the potion.

"It helps a werewolf maintain their mind during a full moon, rendering them relatively safe. It's a rather new discovery, and in my opinion the recipe could use some work, to make it more affective, but what do I know about writing potions?" he shrugged, grabbing the last few ingredients from the desk and taking them to the cupboard.

"And how is it you know so much about it, again?" Snape's eyes narrowed, trying to work out what the boy knew and how much he knew.

"I like to read, and it is in a few textbooks." he replied simply, "Just because I miss a potions class or two does not mean I don't have an interest in the subject. I studied all my classes outside of the classroom.. Other than 'Divination' and 'History of Magic'." he hummed, crossing his arms over his chest.

Snape couldn't hide the impressed expression from floating across his features, Kai certainly didn't inherit that from his father, he thought. Though he knew very little about that side of the boys father.

"Well, I expect good exam results from you then. Now, get to bed it's late." he said, "You have detention with Professor Lupin tomorrow morning." he reminded him, his attention drifting back to the list the boy had written and he dismissed him with a wave of his hand.

"Yes, sir." he hummed, quickly taking himself up to the Slytherin dorms. He did wonder what detention task Lupin had planned for him tomorrow though, after all it was a Saturday morning.
