Sidney Grey opened the door to her old childhood house. She had her desert eagle in her pocket as she searched the old rooms. Dust and cobwebs were all over the place. Sidney remembered her mother always opening to window to smoke one of her favorite cigarette brand. Sidney then looked over at her old room. The walls were a sky blue before, but the walls were all peeling and old. Her old bed was there. Same with her old toys she had under it. Sidney looked out her bedroom window, remembering seeing her mother being betrayed by her street gang that night. Sidney was 10 at the time and didn't understand what was happening. All she knew is that she had lost her mother that night and had to raise herself with the food her mother had bought before she was taken to Arkham. Sidney spent most of the time at school anyways, always reading and studying. Being the best ever. School was a second home to her. Good thing she knew how to copy her mother's signature so she could sign up for high school and got a scholarship to a good college. Then, she came back to Gotham, to finish off the criminal population. But fate had other plans.
Sidney looked out the window a bit longer, observing the alley. It was different then the last time she had seen it. Guess street gangs just stopped coming here, she thought. When Sidney was about to turn around, she felt a gun being pressed against the back of her long dark brown hair.
"Turn around slowly..." a female voice said. Sidney smirked. She could recognize that voice anywhere. Cynthia Lorris, Sidney thought as she turned around to face the woman. The woman had long grey hair and honey colored eyes. She also had a scar above her lip and eye. But the thing that made Sidney know for sure that it was Cynthia, was the bird with a worm in it's mouth silver necklace.
"Wow." Sidney smirked looking straight into Cynthia's eyes, studying them carefully. "It's been 17 years and you're still a terrible mother.."
Cynthia's eyes widen has she dropped the gun. Her tough look she had wiped away as it turned into a smile of glee. She opened her arms and embraced Sidney with a gigantic huge. Sidney hugged Cynthia back, patting her back as she hugged her. Once that long family hug was over, Cynthia smiled as she scanned Sidney carefully.
"You have grown well my darling. Tell me, how have you been." Cynthia said as she brushed off some dust off of Sidney's shoulders.
"Well, I almost had a wedding. Then it just didn't work out." Sidney shrugged. She then looked over at her mother's necklace. "You always liked that bird and the worm saying."
Cynthia chuckled as she touched her necklace, taking it off and looking at it. "It's a true saying. You know how it goes." Cynthia stroked the charm. "There are two types of people in this world. The birds and the worms. Birds have to feed off the worms to survive. Which one are you gonna be?" Cynthia said the quote to Sidney. Sidney rolled her eyes. She had heard that saying millions of time as a child. She knew it by heart. Most importantly, she knew what she was.
"Mom.." Sidney looked over at her. Cynthia had sit down on Sidney's old bed. She looked up at her daughter to hear what she was gonna say. Sidney smiled over at her mother. Taking out the desert eagle.
"I just want to say..." Sidney grinned as she shot her mother right in the head. "Your right. This city is for the birds. And with a worm's death, they will see." Sidney put her desert eagle back in her pocket and walked out of the apartment.
Sidney could hear a few neighbors gasping and dialing for the police. Sidney grinned as she got into her motorcycle and drove off like she hadn't just murdered her own mother. At the moment she had tried to enforce the law and catch criminals but the law pushed her away from going her path, she remember what her mother had always said about birds and worms. Sidney realized what her mother was saying to her now. You can't be the protector of the worms, and you can't be a worm and survive against a bird. You are either a bird or a worm. A useless bystander, or a killer. There are no protectors. People like Batman, Gordon, and the GCPD are just trying to undo the balance. But you can't. You can't undo the balance between the birds and the worms.
"The GCPD just announced that the Riddler had been back in action quite quickly after the escape in Arkham Asylum. A spray painted green question mark has been made on the floor of the bank. 15 million dollars have been stolen and the GCPD have no leads." a newscaster announced. Edward Nigma turned off the news on his computer monitor he was angry as he slammed his cane.
"Me? I would never leave a sloppy clue like this!" he raged as he then adjusted his hat properly.
"Maybe if the GCPD was smart enough to look at it under a negative light." said a voice coming from a dark corner of his base. Riddler turned his chair over to where he heard the familiar voice. "Sidney?" he raised his eyebrow.
Sidney chuckled as she came out of the corner. She was wearing a lime green sleeveless turtle neck bodysuit. She had a long white trench coat over it, with the Riddler's green question mark on the back of it. "Why were you expecting Catwoman?" Sidney joked then stared back at him with a grin. "And don't call me Sidney anymore. From now, call me White Nigma."
