Today in my English class, the teacher asked us to write about what we’re looking forward to in the New Year. I wrote something about working harder in school. You know, the stuff teachers want to hear. But if I was being honest, I would’ve written that I’m looking forward to another year with you. Another year being able to see that smile, stare into those eyes, and wrap myself up in those arms. Another year with you is enough to make me the happiest girl alive. I love you very much."

You sigh dreamily as you pull the pen away from the lily white page of the journal. You admire it for a while longer, the words you had just written down. You wonder what he would think of it. You are rereading what you wrote, when the street light a little distance from your window flickers on. Turning around, you see the bright white light shining down on the dark street. Your heart races with anticipation. Setting the journal on the window seat you are currently sitting, you hop to the ground. You grab the green hoodie off the bed and slip it on over your white PJ’s, along with a pair of white ballet flats. You walk back over to the window seat and get on it. Picking up your journal, you carefully make your way out the window and climb down the trellis.

The night air is cold. You hold the hoodie tighter to yourself and push your hands in the pockets. Your hair blows behind you as you walk through the gate and onto the sidewalk. The streets are deserted, and the only sounds you hear are the wind rushing and your footsteps on the concrete. You keep on walking, mentally counting every familiar sight. The big white house with the flowers hanging down the balcony, the empty lot with the giant blossom tree, and the little store with the lights that spelt ‘Open'....this was a routine, and these were little things that led you every night.

You take one last turn, and suddenly the darkness of the streets lift away. There are lights everywhere you turn. Hung high and low on buildings, and wrapped around trees. There are street lamps and other things that make the world look so bright. You smile as you take it all in. You come here every night, but the magic in this place still enchants you.

You break out of your reverie and run down the streets. You come across a pavement. Walking on it, you meet some stairs. This is it. This is where the lights shine brightest. White tree lights are wrapped around the trees, and street light are placed side by side, wooden benches in front of them, placed in a circle. It's a beautiful scene. And this happens every night. And every night, you come here to bask in its loveliness. You go around and sit on one of the benches. You pull your hands out of your pockets, still holding your journal. You stare down at your fingers, holding it tightly. The breeze still moves around you and the silence gives you time to think. Your heart races in anticipation.

Suddenly, your sight is blinded by two hands gently clamping over your eyes. A flutter forms in your chest as a smile creeps on your lips. A voice whispers softly near your ears, “Guess who.” “Daehyunie Oppa!” you say excitedly. He chuckles and removes his hands. As you open your eyes, you see him walk in front of you in a black coat and dark jeans. His heartfelt smile makes you melt and his liquid brown eyes shine like the lights all around. “Hi,” Daehyun's voice rings. “Hey there,” you say, standing up. Daehyun: “Were you waiting long?” You: “Um, no, not really. I just got here.” Daehyun: “Okay, good," his smile returns.

His arms open up and you fold into them. His warmth sends chills down your spine. He places his lips on your cheek and kisses you tenderly. You feel so bubbly and elated, right there in his arms. “I have something for you,” he whispers. He pulls away from you and digs in his pocket. Daehyun pulls out a crumbled folded piece of paper, and hands it over to you. You take it, saying, “I have something for you, too.” You look back and see the journal lying on the bench you were sitting on. You pick it up and give it to him. He takes it eagerly and flips it open to the last page you wrote on. You unfold the piece of paper he gave you and begin reading.

"Hi, (Y/N)-ah. I had to tell you how much you were on my mind today. I know I say you’re always on my mind, and that’s true, but today…it was different. I literally could not focus on anything else. While recording songs for our new album, I kept messing up the lyrics because you’re all I was thinking of. I reminisced on memories of you and your award winning smile and your gorgeous eyes. And I realized how excited I am everyday to be here. I literally wait in anticipation until the time when I can leave and meet you where the lights shine brightest. If I had my choice, I’d be with you all day. Unfortunately, I can’t, but I’m making due with seeing you every night. I love you, (Y/N). Never forget it."

Your cheeks pain from smiling so widely. “I mean every word,” Daehyun says. You glance up from the paper to him. “So do I,” you say. His eyes move to the journal, then back to you. “For the record, I look forward to spending another year with you, too. The simple thought of that makes me the happiest guy alive.” He flashes a smile and hands you back your journal. You take it and slip the paper he gave you in it. “Why don’t you ever give me back my notes?” Daehyun asks, as he takes a seat on the bench.

“Because I like reading them over,” you reply as you sit next to him. Daehyun: “But what if I want to read over yours? I can’t, because you always write in that journal, and I always give it back to you.” You: “I’ll tell you what....when we stop meeting here, I’ll give you the journal.”

Daehyun's head whips over in your direction and he stares wide-eyed. “Y-you mean, when w-we break up?” he stutters. “What? No! Where did you get that idea?” you ask. Daehyun: “Because you said when we stop meeting here. I just assumed that…” You: "That I meant when we break up?” He nods slowly, his gaze never leaving yours. “What did you mean then?” Daehyun asks. You: “I meant, the day we can be together. All the time. When I don’t have school, and I can travel with you. When we can see each other anytime we want. When we don’t only have to meet here.” Daehyun: “Oh, I get it....you scared me for a minute," he chuckles. You: “You think I’d want to break up with you?” you raise an eyebrow. Daehyun: “I hope not. I’m going to marry you someday, (Y/N).”

The smile on your face fades and your eyebrows knit together. His words…they are so serious. You know he means it. You just…never heard him say it before. You both are so young, but he sounds so sure. “Something wrong?” he asks. “N-no. Nothing’s wrong,” you insist. “In fact…,” you smile, “everything’s absolutely perfect.” A grin spreads over his lips. Daehyun: “Yeah, it is.” He leans in and lightly kisses your lips. Leaning his forehead on yours, he says, “(Y/N), saranghaeyo.” You: “Saranghaeyo," you smile. "Always and forever." He kisses you again, the pulls away slowly, his arm snaking around your shoulders, your head laying on his chest. “So, um, will I find you here tomorrow?” Daehyun asks, already sure of the answer. “Of course," you reply, smiling. Daehyun: "Same time, same place. Just you and me…where the lights shine brightest." he says, giving you an eye smile.
