Transfiguration was next in terms of classes for school. Professor McGonagall was the teacher for that class. (F/N) walked alongside other students from the previous class, following them until he reached McGonagall's classroom.
Inside was a room split in two; there were two columns of desk on one side and another two on the other side. The desk at the back of the classroom was set up so that it would be mirrored if it were cut in the middle. Along with that were two chalkboards, one on the left was written like normal and the other in reverse.
The teacher, however, was not there. Instead there was a cat sitting on the desk, looking towards the students that were entering the classroom. Some people stopped, scared for a moment.
"Is that Mrs. Norris!?" One asked.
"No, that's not Mrs. Norris! Mrs. Norris has red eyes!"
As students got closer and closer, they noticed that the cat wasn't going to attack, or run off to get Mr. Filch. Instead, it just sat there, while the other students took their seats.
When (F/N) looked for a seat, he could find none at the back. Those seats were the first to be taken by other students. His only option, after standing for a few seconds, was to get a seat next to a boy, a boy with red hair.
He took a seat, and he quickly noticed that the cat was now watching him, its eyes on his person. He returned the gaze, looking towards the cat as if he were attempting to mimic it. Eventually stopping, (F/N) looked over at the kid next to him, the red headed boy, with freckles on his face.
"Where's the teacher?" The boy looked back at him, and then motioned to the cat.
"Professor McGonagall is right there," he answered. (F/N) looked over at the cat again, seeing that it was still staring at him. He could feel that there was something weird about the cat, he squinted his eyes and tried to see it, but he couldn't really figure it out.
"Are you sure?" (F/N) asked the kid, only to be answered when the cat leaped off of the table and then transformed. From a small cat resting on the desk, to Professor McGonagall appearing right in front of him. (F/N) recoiled when he saw it, and was put on the spot when he saw the teacher staring at him. And Professor McGonagall could feel that he knew better. Instead of expanding upon that, she changed the subject to something else.
"And where, Mr. (L/N), is your textbook?" She asked. (F/N) looked down at his table, seeing the lack of books, and looked back at the teacher.
"I...forgot them, Professor," he answered.
"I see," McGonagall replied. "Then you'll have to share with Mr. Weasley here." The two boys at the same table looked at each other one more time. "Now I assume that you have your wand with you?" He produced the wand hesitantly, showing the damage done to it. The kid next to him, as well as Minerva, could see (F/N)'s hand shake as he showed her his wand. She took note of it and walked over to her desk, while Weasley spoke up.
"Are you okay?" He asked. (F/N) glanced back at him and set his wand down.
"I'm fine," he replied.
Class began once the final kid took a seat. McGonagall waved her wand and closed the door calmly, allowing herself the chance to teach without any noisy passerby. Her class was Transfiguration, which was the practice of turning one object into another. It was essentially the magic she uses when she turned from a cat into a human, which could raise a bunch of questions about the amount of animals someone would see in their day-to-day life.
With another wave of her wand, McGonagall waved her wand again and passed out a single match to each student, except for the boy next to (F/N).
"For today, we will start small," McGonagall said, walking down the aisle to speak to each student. "I want you to transform this single match into a needle." She then proceeded to demonstrate the wand waving technique and the cantation to give the spell the effect needed.
